About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
The contact owns a 1999 Ford F-250. While driving approximately 55 mph the fuel tank detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The mechanic stated both fuel tank straps had corroded and one of the straps was fractured. After the fuel straps were replaced, the contact noticed the fuel gauge reading decreased. The vehicle began leaking approximately 15 gallons of fuel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician stated the fuel line had to be replaced. NHTSA recall campaign number 11V385000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:mounting) may be related to the failure. The technician stated the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 216,776. The one other thing that wasn't made clear in the first report was the technician did not make clear that the fuel line cracked because of the gas tank falling. Updated 10/26/2011
