problem #1

Dec 302002

(reported on)

F-250 Super Duty XLT

  • 105,000 miles

I was going home late in the evening, moving at about 35mph, suddenly the steering wheel was loose as if the truck was on ice. The truck headed for the ditch and I could not control direction at all. The truck came to a stop and then slowly tipped on its side. Then I opened the drivers window and lifted my 13 year old son out and hoisted myself out. I was looking at the underside of the truck because I saw something hanging at the wrong angle. I realized it was the steering link that connects the steering box to the steering knuckle. I spent alot of time researching the issue and found that the NHTSA had opened an action for this same issue in March of 01 and that this shaft had failed on several other occasions in the 99 and 00 Super Duty trucks, on the order of 45 times!! Thankfully I wasn't going very fast and I didn't have a load of Boy Scouts as I do often.... Apparently Ford knows about this and even issued a recall of sorts for this in Brazil and Mexico...????
