The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the CP4 fuel pump and informed the contact that there was rust on the fuel pump because of water damage, even though the water sensor failed to detect the presence of water within the fuel system. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the Bosch CP4 high pressure fuel injector pump had failed and there were metal shavings in the fuel filter, which caused the vehicle to stall. The vehicle was being repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

The contact stated that while driving up a slight incline and pulling a trailer a burning type odor was suddenly present inside the cabin and the check engine light had flashed on before the vehicle began to lose power and stalled. After lifting the hood smoke and flames were present coming from the engine compartment. The contact attempted to extinguish the flames using a fire extinguisher but was unsuccessful and the flames intensified and began to spread to the cabin of the vehicle. Eventually the vehicle was completely destroyed from the flames. A fire report was taken at the scene and the vehicle was towed away. A police report was not taken. The cause of the failure was not determined. The local dealer was notified of the incident. The contact also indicated that a motorist observed fuel leaking from under the vehicle prior to the incident. The failure mileage was 28,000.
