Several F150 owners have reported this moon roof failure; the moon roof on the F350 is the same unit.
Apparently, not everything on my F350 is “Built Ford Tough.†Take the moon roof, for example. With only 40,000 miles on my 2010 truck, all I had to do was open the moon roof the other day to have the track and frame “fall apart,†according to the description from my local Ford service center. Pretty much mirrors the experiences of others on this board. So bad, they say, that the entire moon roof assembly has to be replaced. Just from opening it, I repeat. Oh, and did I mention they want $2,400 to do the repair? (Sheehy Ford, Gaithersburg, MD—slightly lower if I want to take it to another city.) Otherwise, what am I to do, duct tape the moon roof glass in place so it doesn’t rain into the cab? This is not one of “the advantages of being a Ford owner,†touted by Ford advertising, that I wanted to “discover.†http://owner.ford.com/
And after a short bit of research on line I find that my moon roof assembly is not lonely. Many of the F-series moon roofs from this, and other model years, have suffered the same demise if I am to believe the many reports posted on line. All one has to do apparently is just open it on a pleasant afternoon and plastic pieces fly out (as happened with mine), and the whole assembly essentially disintegrates into uselessness. And worse, it can’t be closed. What, I ask you, is more “annoying†than a moon roof that can’t be closed? Two flat tires perhaps? But even that’s not as bad when it’s raining.
Why is it, that on an otherwise great workhorse of a truck like my diesel F350, which I have used to reliably tow my 14,000 lb RV almost anywhere, do I have to put up with a faulty, simple amenity like a moon roof that can’t even be opened and closed (well, not actually closed) without falling apart? And worse, after it’s replaced with what I presume will be an identical unit, I won’t dare even use it for fear of a repeat failure!
Of course I wrote to Ford expecting that, based on just the sheer number of reports on the internet about these moon roof failures, there must be a Ford recall or service bulletin dealing with this defect, and asking what they can do to defray the repair cost and help make this right? In a “nice†way Ford basically told me to just go pound sand.
