Five Hundred

  • Automatic transmission
  • 101,000 miles

The engine surge is not just at low speeds, it also occurs when traveling on the highway. And it isn't always a surge, many times the tachometer suddenly reads a much higher number while the engine speed slows down dramatically. This has happened frequently on the highway. This first time it happened to us, we were in the center lane, traveling about 70mph, when the tach surges but the engine speed rapidly declined. Traffic was heavy and we were very close to being in an accident involving several other vehicles. Our two granddaughters were with us when this occurred - I know I wouldn't be able to live with myself it anything had happened to them.

We initially thought it was a transmission issue and had it checked out, nothing wrong with the transmission. The dealership also didn't have any answers for us, they seemed to be unaware of any issues. Then I stumbled upon your website, thank you!

We purchased the recommended part to fix the issue, but the parts department did not seem to know that there was an updated "improved" part - so in actuality we have installed a part that is still causing the same issues.

Again, we didn't even know that there was this type of problem with this vehicle as evidently the Ford Motor Company does not wish to identify this as an issue. I now believe that for them to recognize the defect and fix it there must be loss of life - it is too bad that this is the only way that these issues are addressed. Maybe if the upper management would give up a small part of their outrageous incomes, defects that effect the lives of others could be covered. I can guarantee, that if any of them had this type of problem when traveling on the road it would be fixed immediately with a covered recall.

These defects are in the engine design - trust me, if I make a mistake at my job, it is my responsibility to correct it, not my customers! (And as a side note, any mistake I make will not cause serious injury or death of a loved one)

Very unsafe, unpredictable and upsetting. This does not happen all the time, but when it does its definitely dangerous. Happens when putting the brake on and almost to a stop. The engine will GUN ahead fast.

I dont know how this happend but is so bad that this problem cause an accident. The car accelerates itself reaching sometimes 300 to 400rpms; my wife, son and I experience the same. We have to step on the brake so hard some times because he go foward o backward without touching the gas pedal. Please let me know how to solve this problem, we cant not afford to buy another car and we like the confort of the five hundred with only 62000miles We took this problem to the dealer but did nothing any way they went bankclose.

2005 Ford 500 started surging especially noticeable when stopped or at slow speeds. Had throttle body cleaned however this did no good. When on vacation in eastern USA car quit and went into safe mode. Got car re-started however engine light stayed on. Went to Yankee Ford in Portland Maine who diagnosed the problem as the throttle body. A part was found 2 hours away and I would like to thank Yankee Ford for getting me back on the road the same day. Total cost $925.00. Called Ford Canada and advised them that this was a safety issue and a recall should have been initiated. Was told they had never heard of this problem. I guess that I should have expected this response. I believe a recall should have been ordered due to the dangerous consequences of the unintended surges.
