CVT transmissions in this vehicle, all years, are cheap junk at best. I told an AAMCO franchise manager the problems I was having with my car and he knew all about it; pulling out his book of all vehicle makes/models and their respective transmissions. He asked if I knew anything about CVT or what that stood for (continuously variable transmission) and of course, not being a "motor-head" replied no. He went on to state that they typically do not hold up as well as the typical automatic transmissions used in most cars; the idea being that the CVT trannys are supposed to provide a seamless shift between gears, smooth and quiet. At any rate, it seems that the only fix for the problem is to install either a rebuild CVT transmission or buy a new one ($3500 - 4500) with a high probability of it reoccurring later on down the road. I understand that this is only one perspective on the matter but I have spoken to other Ford Five-Hundred owners who state they have the same problem I'm having. Needless to say, I will be selling this and buying another vehicle. Can't believe Ford would install such a junk tranny in an otherwise fairly decent car.
