Flex SEL V6

2018 Flex SEL bought 3 weeks ago brand new from local Ford dealer. Now have 400 miles on it.

Came home yesterday, put it in park in driveway and it starting rolling backwards to the street. Had to engage emergency brake. Cannot move shifter and the display shows it in R even though firmly in Park.

Engine light on. Will not start. Had it towed to dealer and was told the shifter cable broke and part is on order. Here are the questions: How can this happen with a brand new car? Is it safe after it is fixed?...(we have young grandchildren we transport and wife no longer wants to drive it as she can never trust it again and views it as unsafe).

Appreciate your thoughts.
