  • 100,000 miles
Our 2006 Ford Freestyle will sometimes surge when first started or at low speeds. It seems to do this the worst when just started and backing out of the garage. Stepping on the brake will stop it but the engine will race for a little bit.

I have a 2006 Ford Freestyle with 52,000 miles on it. Last summer, it began lurching when stopped or moving slowly. It continued to get worse until last week when it began doing it so badly, the vehicle just died. When it was restarted, the check engine light was on and the vehicle was running very rough. I drove to autozone and the two engine codes were P0106 and P0109. They erased them and following the Ford Freestyle forums, I purchased some throttle-body cleaner. Once home, I cleaned the throttle body and it seems to have helped the issue, although it still is surging some. It's crystal clear that Ford needs to honor this issue as a recall and not expect me to pay $700 at the dealer to have it fixed.

Freestyle

The engine on my 2006 Ford Freestyle revs up on its own at low idling parking lot speeds. The wrench light then illuminates on the instrument display and the engine stalls. Upon restarting the engine the wrench light stays lit and the vehicle accelerates sluggishly. This problem has happened when backing out of parking spots and when driving in stop and go traffic.

Freestyle

  • 78,000 miles
My 2006 Ford Freestyle has had an increasing number of incidences where the car has just come out of park and into forward or reverse, where all of a sudden the throttle will surge even when applying the brake. When it is hot out, it is now occurring several times a week. Yesterday it did the same thing and then stalled completely. When I turned the car back on, the 'wrench' light was on and the car lost all its power. Then I disconnected the battery and everything was back to normal. I checked the problem online and it seems to be a very prevalent and extremely dangerous situation for this car. The dealers are unable to repair it at this time because the problems are happening so often that the needed parts are on back-order. I am forced to drive the car until the parts become available, constantly fearing that it will cause an accident.

2006 Ford Freestyle accelerates - surges in reverse. Was in a parking lot and went from park to reverse. Before I could step on the gas, it accelerated and I had to slam on the brakes. I nearly ran into a family. No car should be able to do that on its own. I am also disappointed that this is a known problem and nothing has been done about it.

The throttle body in my 2006 Ford Freestyle was causing my car to either stall or lunge out of control. Trying to pull into traffic, the car stalled in front of oncoming traffic. Then began working as normal. A few days later the car began to lunge forward or backward when the transmission was shifted. Would lunge when in drive and stopped. Took to dealer, and they replaced with a new throttle body. I do not have the old one. Ford knows there is a problem. They have been backordered for most of 2009 and into 2010 on this part. They have changed the replacement part to a new one, with different part number. Thousands of cars have had this issue. Cars can stall at highway speeds, in traffic. Or can suddenly lunge forward even when the brake is depressed.

Engine surge/ wrench light illuminated at stop sign. Had to stand on brakes to prevent lurching into intersection. Turn off vehicle ok on restart. Research reveals that this problem is a known throttle body issue. Ford needs to recall this item immediately. Felt need to register incident after reading of other operator's problems.

My 2006 Ford Freestyle occasionally experiences engine rev and sudden acceleration when operated at low speeds, usually when the ac is in use. Occurs only after idling or operating at low speeds in excess of 3 minutes. Each time I had sufficient clearance to avoid an accident, but it's been close. It has happened a total of 5 times in the past 6-8 weeks, pretty much since it had gotten warm enough to use the ac. Never happened in the past 3+ years of ownership until this year. Most recent occurrence was yesterday, 30 May 2010.

  • 70,000 miles
The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle suddenly began to lose power and decrease in speed. The vehicle would not gain speed when the accelerator pedal was depressed. The throttle control transmission light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop and the mechanic stated that this was a common failure. A diagnostic test was performed and the failure ceased when the vehicle was restarted. The vehicle was not repaired and the contact drove to her residence. The dealer stated that a diagnostic could not be performed unless the failure was present. They assumed that the failure was due to the throttle body of the engine. The failure recurred a month later while the vehicle was idling. The contact placed the vehicle into reverse and then back into drive. The vehicle accelerated and quickly stalled. The emission system light illuminated and the failure occurred three times in one day. The following day, the light remained illuminated, but there was no failure. They took the vehicle to the Ford dealer for diagnostic testing, which confirmed the throttle body failure. Through research, the contact verified that this was a common failure with her make and model vehicle. The manufacturer stated that they would not be responsible for the repairs. The vehicle is currently at the contact's residence waiting to be repaired. The failure mileage was 70,000 and current mileage was 71,000. Updated 09/14/09. Updated 09/14/09 updated 09/16/09.
