Bought this car used 2 years ago. Car started making a loud noise, but when put in drive, it quiets a little. Not running well at all. Took it to get it looked at, 1st replaced a bad water pump (almost 700) and then was told it's the transmission. They want $6K for, which I don't have. I still owe $6K on the car. So, I am basically stuck w a car that doesn't work and I can't sell or trade in, nor can I afford to at this point.

  • 70,500 miles
When starting the vehicle a loud rattling noise can be heard. This noise stops temporarily when the car is shifted from "park" to "drive". the noise then becomes progressively louder when the accelerator is pressed. Gas mileage has declined when driving. When parking on one occasion the car lunged forward without accelerating the gas pedal. I took the car into a automotive repair shop to see what the problem was and they indicated that the entire transmission needs to be replaced because of defective design/materials in the "continuously variable transmission" (cvt). Ford has done nothing to provide a replacement transmission at no charge and has not modified cvt to correct this obvious manufacturing defect.

While driving 45 mph had a sudden loss of power and increase rpms. Immediately pulled over. Engine idle in park makes a loud helicopter sound when engaged in drive or reverse sound is not heard as loud. After doing lengthy research this common problem with cvt transmissions by Ford at around the same mileage (70,000mi).Ford has yet to recall these vehicles voluntarily. Dealers insist transmission needs replacing (common theme).no way thousands of vehicles should have catastrophic transmission failure at 70,000! this is a manufacturer and safety issue. I'm just thankful I didn't have my kids in the car and traveling on the interstate.

My 2007 Ford Freestyle transmission started slipping recently. I have always taken good care of my car and my mechanic just told me that I need a new transmission. He also told me that there have been many problems with the 2007 Ford Freestyle transmissions. I cannot believe I have to replace my transmission which costs approximately $6,000 to replace. I will be contacting Ford directly as well.

The engine revs up & the car lurches forward, even when my foot is on the brake. The engine has even revved up while the car was sitting in park in a parking lot. I have to make weekly trips of 300+ miles due to my child's medical condition. I am starting to worry about our safety in this vehicle.

  • 35,621 miles
12/10/09 mileage: 35,621 dealer service for rattling noise in engine on cold start up, diagnosed as defective tensioner assembly, but was likely the transmission as same noise was later heard when the transmission was repaired. 12/08/11 mileage: 53,401 dealer service for noise in engine at idle - much worse when cold, diagnosed as faulty automatic transmission. Dealer removed and attempted to repair automatic transmission and found input shaft bearing scores and input shaft scored. Differential shaft splines worn down and splines on ptu worn down and seized together. Transmission was then replaced with rebuilt unit. This was the second transmission installed in this car 3/28/12 mileage: 55,234 dealer service for excessive noise in transmission, described as a growl. Diagnosed transmission concern and noise was verified. Were asked to return unit to dealer at later time for further diagnosis 4/2/12 mileage: 55,338 dealer service for transmission problem, corrected by installing a rebuilt transmission. This was the third transmission installed in this car. Dealer explained that the replacement rebuilt transmission carried a one year warranty 7/1/13 mileage: 63,301 while driving on a street, vehicle produced loud clunk sound after which it would no longer respond to throttle inputs. Vehicle coasted to stop. Fortunately, street was empty. Transmission was inoperable, as vehicle would not move forward or backward in any gear under its power. Vehicle coasted in any gear, indicating that final drive line was no longer connected to transmission or engine. Vehicle towed to dealer. Diagnosed failed transmission. Dealer stated that a 4th transmission and replacement oil cooler were needed for $6,900. During the diagnosis, front wheels locked up rendering it impossible to move the vehicle and dealership had to drag it out of service bay.

Over the last couple of years, I've noticed that the vehicle would jump a little when shifted into gear. Occasionally, the same little lurch would happen at a stoplight. Today, while stopped at idle the engine repeatedly revved over the course of about 10 seconds causing the vehicle to jump forward even with the brakes applied. Shortly after, a similar problem occurred, but not as pronounced as the previous event. After the incident, the performance of the engine seemed to have degraded and the vehicle was only able to accelerate very slowly.

The cvt transmission in the 2007 Ford Freestyle are useless. I am not the only one having to replace a transmission way before time. I had a 1996 Camry with 230, 000 miles on it and I never had to replace a transmission or the engine. Now, I am left to replace a transmission that Ford knew was a bad product (hence, stopping the manufacturing of the Freestyle, revamping the transmission and other problems areas and putting it back into rotation as the Taurus X). I still owe alot of money on this car. I know that Ford finally did a rebate of sorts for the poorly designed throttle body and thankful I have received a refund for that expense. How long will it take for Ford to compensate us Freestyle owners with a horribly designed transmission? I really wished I had never given up my Toyota Camry. I felt safer in that car than my Freestyle.

I just bought this car yesterday. It idles sporadically on park (often dies from surging) and lunges severely on drive and reverse. I have to avoid parking in front of other vehicles to prevent hitting them as my vehicle will shoot forward immediately even with my foot off the break. I have to hit the breaks firmly and quickly. It feels like the car has a mind of its own and revs hard at the most inconvenient times. I'm very afraid this will cause an accident!
