problem #1

Aug 052010

Fusion SE 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 93,206 miles

This runs concurrent to my other complaint of the transmission. 1st tranny problems, then motor starts to make a rattling sound that progressively got louder. Eventually the car goes into a limp mode where it will run at idle but as soon as you try to accelerate it would stall out and shut down. Noticed my exhaust manifold was glowing red and the code reader on the car showed various codes pertaining to sensors, catalytic converter and camshaft position sensors. Replaced manifold sensors and even the entire manifold itself as the catalytic converter is welded to it. Nice design boys!! Still no dice and now I'm out close to $1000. Next I turn my attention to the tone ring connected to the camshaft pulley. It was loose and the thinking was that it was throwing the sensors off running the gas rich which in turn could be the cause of the glowing hot manifold. Well of course you cannot take off the pulley without Ford's special tool which costs who knows what so @ this point I take into Ford. 2 weeks later they still are arguing over what to do with it even though I have explained to them exactly what is going on... Ring is replaced and...Rattling noise still there. Costs to dismantle motor to find out what is wrong: upwards of $2000 and the diagnoses might just be that you need a new motor. So, found a salvaged motor with 80,000km, delivered to my mechanic for $1200. He did the swap for $1000 (Ford quoted $4500) and 3 months later the tranny went!! Mechanic found me a tranny for $1500 (didn't even bother asking Ford their price). Tranny is starting to do the same B.S. only if I accelerate too quickly, so basically I just use it as my daily commuter and drive like some dumb old man. To think I purchased this brand new because I was tired of fixing beaters!!!

The tab:

$28,000 brand new in 2007. $ 1,000 for sensors and manifold $ 800 for ford to change my tone ring $ 1,200 for used motor $ 1,000 for motor swap $ 1,800 for tranny and swap

total $33,800

Never mind the fact that I had to take it in for stupid "warranty" check ups and keep full coverage on it for insurance since it was financed....
