The ABS system engaged and then the brakes lost full function while driving our 2012 Fusion. The brake petal became very soft and only fully worked if I pressed the pedal nearly to the floor each time I applied them. I researched the problem using YOUTUBE. I also searched for recall on this problem and learned that Ford does indeed have a recall. After reading and viewing several posts and familiarizing myself with the cause, which pointed to the valves sticking in the ABS module, I simply used the rubber handle of my hammer and tapped the module several times. Voila, this undoubtedly released the sticking valves. This returned the brake system back to normal operation.

I will be contacting the dealer to have the system checked. The recall states that the problem is caused due to Dot 3 brake fluid reacting to the Zinc plating inside the module and causing the valves to stick open when the ABS system is engaged, and only will replace the module if the problem exists when checking at dealership. Otherwise, they will flush the system, replace fluid with Dot 4 install a new updated fluid cap with Dot 4 fluid only and check operation. When you go to the dealer be sure to mention the recall number >19S54< that will ensure that they, MUST do the concern and should be at no cost. This according to the recall put into effect by Ford Motor Company per pdf 19S54 enforced by NHTSA. A later updated recall, from 7/20/18 >EA18-002 now includes all Fusions 2006-2012 be included in the recall.

Brake pedal became extremely soft and will not pump up to being firm after ABS activation on ice. I was driving on snow/ice and pressed the brakes which engaged the anti-lock brakes, 30 ft ahead I applied the brakes to turn and they traveled nearly to the floor. I made it around the block and back home where, when parallel parking, I nearly hit the cars in front of and behind me due to increased stopping distance.

Once parked I tried pumping them, and they would not firm up. The fluid level is fine, I have had zero prior issues with the brakes until today's ABS activation.
