About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
I own a 2016 Ford Fusion SE and my trunk constantly opens by itself while driving down the road or parked I can be 20 mi away from it and I come back and the trunk is opened. So obviously it has nothing to do with me accidentally hitting the button. It has started 4/1/21 and continues to open.

The trunk randomly opens on its own. It happens while the car is driving down any sort of road or driveway, parked and running, or off altogether. When I get out to shut the trunk sometimes it stays shut and sometimes it will repeatedly open the trunk 4 or 5 more times before I can even get back in the car. I feel this is very unsafe, especially as I am a small currently pregnant female to have to keep exiting my car to shut my trunk repeatedly. This has been going on for the last year. I got online and read several forums of other people with my car complaining of the same issue. Recently, I have gone to my car to leave and found it completely dead, as in it will not unlock, or start. I ended up replacing the battery thinking that my be it. Hardly a month later, the same thing happened again. I was able to call a Ford dealership and discuss the problem along with the trunk opening issue. I charged the battery and brought it to the dealership. After they ran diagnostics and witnessed the trunk opening randomly they found that the trunk switch was faulty which caused the cars computer to be on even while the vehicle was off which drained the battery. They replaced the trunk switch on the trunk lid. I asked if the part was corroded or damaged or what caused it to happen and they said it looked fine, it was not damaged on the exterior and everything was sealed as it should be inside. I stated that I used my trunk less than the average person, especially lately as I've been afraid to use it. Knowing it was a 2016 model, I asked if the part was old or worn that it should need replaced already and the dealership stated no. They stated that the part was faulty and that I had not caused it in any way. I ended up having to pay $309.04 for this part to be replaced which makes me not happy since it sounds like this should be a part on a recall notice from Ford.
