Fusion Energi Titanium 2.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 43,250 miles

Ford has a serious safety issue that needs to be recalled on 2013 Ford Fusion electronic power steering box. The steering box suddenly fails leaving drivers with little control of the vehicle. Ford should be standing behind this failure that can result in collisions and deaths. My steering box failed while going through a narrow mountain pass. Had my daughter been driving she would have been able to control the car.

Drove to San Francisco and parked in the parking lot. Went back to the car to start it and it complained about the steering wheel locked. Had it towed to dealer who said that the diagnostics show that steering gear failed and it is not covered by extended warranty and would cost $2450 to fix it.

Fusion Energi LS

My Ford Fusion Energi that is just under 4 years old and with less than 70K miles had a sudden loss of power steering. Unlike other cars and trucks I have owned over the past 40 years this failure was the most disconcerting. It took super human strength to just get the wheel back to center, I was in a 10mph turn when it happened. I have since learned that Ford EPAS steering system does not disengage when it fails making you have to overcome the servo motor resistance along with the regular resistance for the steering system. This is what makes it so dangerous when it fails. Ford provided me with no financial assistance with this, probably because I didn't crash. Ready for the cost to repair? $2193.00. that's right over two grand just to fix a faulty power steering unit. Needless to say Ford has gone down the wrong road with me on this one. NO MORE FORDS for me and I realy mean it. Not only because of the cost but now I cant even let my wife drive the car, If it were to fail while she was driving she would not be able to control the car. I also did the math, I purchased this car expecting to get between 150K to 250K miles out of it without any major repairs and so far I have. I never thought fixing the power steering would be considered a major repair but at $2300.00 I think that it was a major repair. Saving 4 to 5 cents a mile by buying a hybrid just got nullified. I know all cars are going to Electric steering assist so my advice is just be mindful of the cost and the reparability of the unit in the car your going to buy. Also know what happens to the forces needed to control the car when it fails.

I just told you about my Ford experience. Don't let this happen to you.
