Had a catastrophic brake failure on Friday with my 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid with 178,000 miles. The brake failure resulted in the need to downshift gears and use the emergency brake to stop. Car has a Christmas light display of error codes from traction module, brake system and wrench codes. This is not safe and the 2011 Ford Fusion hybrids should be included in the recall. It's at a repair facility now. Brake fluid is fine, no leaks, calipers are fine.

The failure happened when the car was normally driven. Luckily I was driving in a park so I didn't cause any accident. There was no pre warning on the dashboard to provide any impending failure. The problem went away in about 15 minutes after I restarted the car multiple times. After the car was found drivable, then I drove the car to a Ford dealer and left car for the technician to perform a diagnostic. Few hours later, the service rep called me that the problem is with the ABS module and the brake hydraulic module.

My complaint to Ford is that the car manufacture should not charge me full cost for the repair as this may appear to be a design problem. The design of such electronic system has taken no consideration of simultaneous failure that could render the whole brake system inoperable, thereby endangering the life of the car occupants.

May 2018 - Driving down a fairly busy residential area in heavy stop-and-go traffic going about 25-30 mph when the entire braking system lights came on and the hydraulic brakes stopped working. The brakes worked, but it took the full force of my foot on the brake to stop the car. The car was basically in either 'full-stop' or 'go' mode - there was no way to just slow down. I was able to pull onto a less-traveled side road and restarted the car. After restarting, the problem appeared to go away and I was able to drive back home safely (although very worried that it would happen again once I got on the highway - fortunately it didn't happen again.)

But, it did happen again a few days later. This time in a parking lot right after starting the car. I took it to the dealership and they replaced the sensors and some of the ABS parts - at a cost of $1970.

All was fine until August 2018. Happened again three more times, twice while backing out of my driveway and once again in a parking lot. Stopping the car and restarting it seems to 'solve' the problem, but it's not really solved, just still limping along and every time start to drive there's a big fear that it'll happen again, but with more serious consequences. It appears that this has happened to many people from my review of this site, but Ford does not seem to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation. I hope it will not take a serious injury or death before Ford takes this seriously!
