The crankshaft pulley separates from the rubber hub so that the pulley needs to be replaced. This seems to be a problem with Ford 4L V6s first heard about explorers now mustangs

This is an obvious issue on the Ford 4.0L Cologne V6 engine, although this one lasted longer than most. After 12 years the rubber cracked and separated, throwing the counterweight off of the front of the crankshaft pulley. Fortunately the car was at idle, so no damage to the radiator or other components. This is a fairly inexpensive part and I used an OEM unit, but also went ahead and changed out the serpentine belt, idlers, and tensioners at the same time since everything was already off of the front of the motor. Hopefully all will last another 100K miles. I consider this typical age/wear related failure on a 12 year old car.
