I paid $2,000 to have repaired 12/12/2014. The problem was first detected when I bought the car 7/2012, with 44,500 miles, and reported to a Ford dealer 9/18/2012. The initial problem was the lack of occasion steering when going around a corner. Then I noticed what looked like transmission fluid on the garage floor but couldn't find a leak and the trans and power steering levels were fine.
The next problem detected at about 60,000 miles was the wheels began to rub the vehicle frame. Front end alignment was checked and even turn lock to lock and you couldn't make the wheels rub. Then the no turning problem became more frequent to where it tripped a sensor and the dealer determined it was the steering rack and told me they have a similar problem with the steering rack on Fusions which use the same steering system.

OWN 2011 FORD MUSTANG AND HAVE HAD 2 ACCIDENTS WHEN THE STEERING HAS LOCKED UP. WHEN TRAVELING AND TURNING @ 25 MPH OR LESS WARNING LIGHTS UP AND STEERING LOCKS WITH NO BRAKES. MANY OTHER 2011 FORDS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS ELECTRONIC STEERING AND HAVE BEEN RECALLED AND FIXED. THE 2011 MUSTANG HAS HAD NO RECALL. I WILL NOT SELL THIS CAR TO SOMEONE ELSE, IN FEAR THAT SOMEONE COULD GET KILLED! FORD SHOULD ACT ON THIS ASAP!
Update from Apr 26, 2020: have fixed problem with out of pocket expense ($1800.00). ford should reimburse cost
