About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Transmission has shifted rough almost from the start but has gotten progressively worse. Currently have 15,000 miles on it. Transmission is often slow to upshift and frequently slams into lower gears. Most dangerous situation when accelerating back up from a stop or slowing down transmission delays several seconds before engaging which has caused me to have several near misses when the car did not respond to me giving it gas. Ford dealer said they could not replicate problem or find any codes.

Since the first day that I bought this new Mustang, the automatic transmission shifts hard and there is a clunking noise. This happens mostly when slowing down and then starting to pick up. Also when just slowing down and the car shifts to 1st gear. The shifting is erratic and noisy. When the engine is cold, it also bangs into 2nd and 3rd gear. The dealership checked it out and said that this is part of the computer programming and is the way the transmission was designed, until it gets used to my driving habits. That was 17, 000 miles ago. They said there might be a computer upgrade in the future. In the meantime I fear a rear end collision when I am unable to pick up speed because of the hesitation and clunking.

The car makes a grinding and knocking noise when I accelerate gently and coast at low speeds up to 15 mph in 1st gear. It doesn't make the knocking noise when I accelerate hard nor does it make this sound when im cruising above 15 mph and give it gas. I am concerned that the transmission may go out and cause an accident.

Vehicle will not engage 1st gear from a stop light intermittently, gears 2,3,5 on up or downshift are high effort with occasional grind in 3rd. In many instances the vehicle behind me in high traffic comes close to rear ending my vehicle. Down and unshifting problem is worse in slow turns.

While traveling between 70 and 75 mph when I let off the throttle my car will down shift (automatic transmission) to lower gear causing a dangerous condition. It is like hitting the brakes without the brake light going on. Also when coming to stop sign it abruptly down shifts, I have not been hit in the rear yet but I am concerned. Brought to dealer three times dealer denies condition because he cannot duplicate it. This is an intermittent condition. I am starting to see it documented on forums.
