Ranger 4WD 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 50,000 miles
Driving on a semi rough road, stopped at a signal to make a left turn, light turned and I went. I pushed on the gas it would not go above idle speed. There was a strong smell of gas coming from the truck. I stopped and got out there was gas pouring out of the bottom of the truck. I decided to check the fuel filter out and the hose on the tank side had popped off. I reconnected it and it been fine since then. Nothing was repaired or replaced.

Ranger 4WD 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 50,000 miles
At 50,000 miles, my Ford Ranger began experiencing a slipping transmission and failed to start. The problems were diagnosed as a failed gasket in the transmission, and a failed valve body part in the motor (which was fixed with an "update kit"). the dealer also indicated that the ball joints were beginning to fail, and a front pinion seal had begun to leak.

Received this vehicle on -1/16/2000 every thing ran good for 6 mo. The engine started a to exhibit a engine spark knock (ping noise). I have had this vehicle in numus numerous times. Each time that I had it in the dealership there was a failure to resolve the problem. I had several different service representatives telling different things about this problem. They concluded that I would have to run the vehicle with a more expensive fuel. Without any compensation. This is in contradiction in of service manual which states these vehicles can be operated on a normal octane. This is an ongoing problem with this vehicle since I purchased new. The ping is more apparent in warm and dry climates. The dealership maintains that everything is in specs. Ping from an engine is not a normal operating condition. I have wrote letters to the main customer service bureau for Ford Motor Company. Also to the lead service representative for the dealership. Still after 2 1/2 years this problem still exists. In fact even with the higher octane fuels the 2.5 engine is still ping at highway speed. Now they are stating to me, that this problem is beyond the scope of the warranty?

Engine is leaking oil, reoccurrences have caused consumer to take vehicle to dealer 7 times for the same problem, last repair was 1 year ago, vehicle is acting sluggish, the oil pan and rear mail oil seal was the cause of the oil leak.. consumer also stated the the air conditioner was blowing out hot air, the dealer discovered that the compressor was leaking.

Counting the current Ranger, is has been my fourth. I've owned 94', 96', 98' and 00' Ranger, I've never experienced as many problems with them as I have with the 00' model year. The cruise control still operates like in the 96' and 98' model but the cruise control keys no longer light up, so at night I have no clue what each of the four buttons is supposed to do. I took the vehicle into the dealership and was advised that all the comonents were there light bulbs wires etc....except that a positive feed to the lights on the buttons was not suplied and this was a "new" feature on the 00' model year. I think is an outrage that such a "cool" option which actually has a purpose has been deleted. My other problem with this vehicle is the transfer case, it failed at 500 miles of operation the truck was less then a month old!!!, I was advised by the dealer had I used the 4X4 thing could have been ugly!!!..I hope is just an isolated incident!!!. also I'm having problems with the engine, sometimes when putting the truck in drive or reverse from a complete stop it stalls....it just dies!!!!!...usually I have to crank it a few seconds before it starts, also a few times the idle speed has increased from under 1000rpm's to over 2000rpm's while the truck is in idle and warmed up, what is causing this I do not know.
