problem #1

Sep 142009

Ranger XLS 2.4L V4

  • Manual transmission
  • 28,000 miles

While going down the road, the check engine light will come on, the speedometer will go to zero (while going at speeds of 55mph), the tachometer will go to zero (while the engine is running) and the odometer will go to dashes (----------). The truck will continue to run, but if the truck is turned off while the is happening, it will not crank. The lights work fine, the radio works. This may last a few minutes up to 30 minutes. I also have to wait for everything to come back on before I can crank the engine. I have a OBDII computer but I get no code. Possibly a bad wire or short. I have taken it to the Ford dealership several times, but they can not find anything wrong. They say it will have to be acting up for them to find the problem and fix it under warranty.

Update from Sep 16, 2010: Found the fix. There is a plug under the dashboard by the pedals that got knocked loose. This would cause the intermittent problem that would never show up at the dealership. Once I made sure the connection was good, everything worked fine. No more problems.
