This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Ford dealer.
This is my fourth Ranger. I purchased 2007 FX4 Level II in July 2007. Clunk in steering developed after long distance trip on highway to SC and back. Brought truck into dealer, immediately changed tie rod ends. Picked up truck and noticed clunk noise was not gone on way back home. Truck back at dealer the next week and replaced entire steering rack under warranty. Quiet as can be and back enjoying my Ranger. Dealer was amazing with service and has a very satisfied customer.

it is definitely something that needs to be recalled. i don't believe it is a safety concern, but it is definitely annoying and worrisome. 6,000 and no problems except that clunk. it did it when it was new so i thought it needed to be broken in. well i will just keep driving it. i still love my ford
Update from Dec 15, 2009: i did not bring it to the dealer yet and probally arent seeing how the noise is going away more and more every 1,000 miles. tiny snaps every now and then, but most of the time it is very quiet. i have 21,000 on it now and i love the truck very much.

I was wondering if anybody else was having this clunking problem, I noticed it almost right after I drove it off the lot, I thought it was coming from the steering but wasn't sure. Now that I found this website I'm going to bring it into ford and make them fix it.

Update to my front end posting. 11 Dec 2007 - - Had new/improved inner tie rod ends installed (Ford put out some new ones - make sure you get these, the old ones in stock do not work) - Had intermediate shaft replaced - Had lower steering shaft replaced No clunking - only been a day, but no sign at all of this. All was covered under warranty. Make sure you get all of these parts replaced at once. Dealer told me Ford HQ did not want to spring for all of this - they want to try one piece at a time to save money. Seasoned mechanics argued that all need replacing at once to remedy the clunking problems - so they (Ford HQ) gave in after much argument (and my dozen+ trips into the shop). I have my fingers crossed. Ron

This problem is now starting again at 10000KMS. The truck is only 6 months old.

Hi folks - all 2007 Rangers are lemons with front end problems (and I am a Ford fan). I have had my truck in the shop 13 times, yes 13 in one year (and 7 of these times over the past 2 1/2 months)!! I do not drive off-road at all and baby my vehicles (in my mid forties). My vehicle only has 15,800 km - I bought it new in Sep 2007.
The following month (Oct 2007) it had a clunk in the steering in mid-turn and clicking & clunking as you accelerated from a stop and when braking to a stop. Dealer replaced the intermediate shaft - clunking was gone for a week - then back to the dealer; "bring it in again at the next oil change (3,000 km away!)..brought it to a different dealer - inner tie rods replaced the 1ST time....had to wait 3 weeks as part came from USA (used to work in a car dealer - usually same day or overnight parts are available - this worried me as I knew it must be a huge problem for Rangers if a US part order had to be placed).. ..clunking still happened...back to the dealer who ordered a 2ND set of inner tie rods...3 weeks wait, then they installed the 2ND set (now the 3rd set for the truck, including the originals)......dealer called and said they were not happy - and that Ford had a new/improved version - so could I leave my truck in for 3 days, so FORD HOTLINE folks could see results of several tests.....so 2 days later, back the truck goes....stays in for three days - gets 3RD set of inner tie rod ends (4th including originals).....fixed?
Nope - now they have to order a second set of the new/improved (2nd version) - 4 weeks wait this time......now the truck goes back to the shop (this week, Dec 2007) - inner tie rods replaced 4TH set (5th including originals) with 2nd edition new/improved tie rods......got a call from the dealer today (10 Dec 2007) - They want to keep it in for another 2 days to completely replace the intermediate steering shaft (again!)....and also to replace the steering rack.
I give up ! This vehicle is junk (I have owned 28 vehicles of all makes) - and I have never had such an unreliable piece of metal in my driveway. Since there are no lemon laws in Ontario, Canada, I have no choice but to suffer, ha, ha! I will get reamed on a trade-in - major $$ depreciation loss - so - if you have this problem, have them replace the intermediate shaft, the inner tie rod ends with the new/improved versions and also replace the entire steering rack - and maybe the whole assembly.
I personally believe that FORD, as usual, is avoiding a massive recall, once again. This would never happen with Honda or Suzuki. Oh well, Best of luck !!

Okay I got, and still get that same clunking sound that the other people have been having. dealership takes it for a test drive and say "We can't hear anything" so still hasn't been fixed. I've had this problem since I first took it off the lot. It was brand new when I bought it!

We bought the 2007 Ford Ranger in June 2007. We had a few little problems at first (wipers died - electrical), safety brake wasn't working right and then the clunk in the steering. I was a little frustrated as this is the first Ford I've owned. Service was great but I am feeling a little nervous that I have a lemon. They ended up replacing the steering column (Shaft) and it took care of the clunk... HOWEVER, the problem is back and the truck goes to the shop again tomorrow OCT 2007.

Steering noise when stopping or accelerating from stopped position. Also when turning. Can hear and feel clunk. Dealer still working on it. Trying to locate problem. Possibly in upper steering column as in past TSB's.

Just bought truck can see many others with same problem, will investigate with first maintenance check. Get back later.
Update from Sep 1, 2009: First service with Ford, changed TieRod Ends, supposed to be bigger set. Also told there's a TPS out on these, whatever that means? Small crack in steering immediately and then full clunk and pops everywhere, worse than before. Next service tomorrow and will get back. 26,048 kms on truck.
Update from Apr 1, 2011: fixed something else can't remember what? Clunk now gone, suttle little click when turning but like the other fellow said; I can live with it. Still a good little truck all in all.
