Ranger XL 2.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 400 miles

For the first 400 miles, the vehicle indicates 18 mpg driving, which was mostly 2 to 10 mile trips. EPA estimate for city driving 2022 Ranger without auto start/stop is 20 mpg.

Dealer service would not do anything until the vehicle had at least 3000 miles, which was claimed to be the break-in period. However, there is no break-in period mentioned in the owner's manual. My understanding is that a break-in period used to be recommended years ago when poorly controlled machining tolerances required under-toleranced parts to be gently worn-in during the first 500 miles. If anything, mpg might be better during the break-in period because the vehicle is being driven more gently than normal.
