Really cold weather snap; my wife starts the car, hears a BANG! and screams. The front coil spring broke, impaling the tire. Just from the vibration of starting the car @ 0 mph! Imagine if she were at speed. I found the spring had finally broken the last whisker of steel that held it together. I have worked with steel of different types, and this was the fracture of poor steel.
Ford had put out a TSB warning of "rust-prone states", and that they would supply a SHROUD to protect the tires. Like the springs rust through? If I had a '56 DeSoto rust wouldn't be a problem.... What about owning up to bad steel, and REPLACING the springs? Ford dealer said, no, it was out of warranty and that I had ignored the shroud protection!

I was blessed that I had just left the house and was pulled over to see what the noise was. Then I had my son back the car up and the broken spring went thru the tire. I just had 4 new tires and a full alignment about 5 miles before this!!! I let you know.

I had to be to work by 5:00 a. m. and live about 20 min. away. I went to leave and found my front left tire was flat. I tried to get the tire off and change it real quick but it would not budge. Luckly I borrowed a car and got to work (ABOUT 30 MIN LATE). I got home and found the coil was broke also. It was wrapped into the tire. I thought I would have to pay for it but the guy we talked to told us about the extended warranty and got it fixed free.

Fortunately I was going 20 miles/hr when the front right spring broke and blew a tire- because of the recall, ford dealer replaced both front springs and the blown tire. The left side spring was cracked and ready to let go.
My back springs- I watched at about 125,000 miles I bottomed out and replaced them at a cost of $450 before they let go. I do a lot of driving on freeways at 65-75 miles per hour I wasn't going to chance the back springs breaking and blowing a tire

I had my car towed to the Ford auto dealer and it has taken them a whole week to get back with me on the problem. I got word today that Ford is going to make it good on everything, tire, coil spring and strut. I still have a concern of driving the car with the other old spring still on the car. IF ANY OF YOU OWN A 2000 FORD TAURUS PLEASE HAVE THE FRONT COIL SPRING LOOKED AT, IF YOU DON'T IT COULD COST YOU YOUR LIFE!

Own a 2000 FORD TAURUS SE 3.0L, V6, Flex Fuel. I chose this single complaint because of the risks/danger of the operator/passengers. My son took this vehicle to college out of state. He was driving approx. 30 mph on a city side street. What sounded like a small "explosion" rendered this car inoperable. Damaged were the right front tire which had been sliced by the front coil/spring. Had he been on a freeway driving 65 mph, his death and possibly others would have been unavoidable. The 2000 Ford Taurus had been recalled (recall #4S17) in 2004 for known front coil spring corrosion, fracture, and failure. Repair parts were unavailable in my area until 2005. Ford stated failure and corrosion could cause the coil spring to break loose and rupture "which could increase the risk of a crash without warning" (per FMC letter sent August 2004). Ford stated they would install protective shields around the front coil springs. This was completed in 09.25.07 at a Ford Dealership. Obviously, this "protective shield" was "faulty" as even with these installed, my son experienced the above incident. My reason for writing is simply to warn owners or potential buyers of the severe danger involved with driving this Ford Taurus SE and to thank God for protecting my son! If I had the energy, I would write 10 additional letters of complaint on this same vehicle.
