The contact owns a 2000 Ford Taurus. While in reverse at relatively low speeds, the contact observed an unusual noise on the right side of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a local repair facility where the mechanic advised the rear passengers side coil spring had failed. The mechanic replaced the coil spring and the sway bar. This was the second occurrence of the failure. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 80,000.

The contact owns a 2000 Ford Taurus. While traveling at 35mph the vehicle started to shake and vibrate. It was difficult to control. He pulled the vehicle over and noticed that the rear passenger side was lower in the wheel base than the front side. The vehicle was driven to the nearest mechanic. The technician stated that the rear coil springs had failed and it should not be driven until it was repaired. He was then explained of a recall that was already issued on the vehicle, but it was on the front coil springs (manufacturer: Ford Motor Company mfr's report date: Jul 06, 2004 NHTSA campaign id number: 04V332000 PE04044 NHTSA action number: PE04044 component: Suspension:front:springs:coil springs ) he contacted the manufacture and stated that he was experiencing the problem explained in the recall but on the rear of the vehicle not the front. The manufacture stated that they would not be responsible for the repairs. He states that since the problem has been recalled on the front it should also include the rear. The vehicle is currently being repaired at a repair shop. The current and failure mileage was 88,000. Bl updated 10/5/09 updated 10/07/09.

She drove to a Ford dealer and they confirmed that the rear coil springs failed. The contact would be responsible for the repair costs because the vehicle was not under warranty and there was no safety recall. Prior to the failure, there was a recall on the front coil springs. The contact believes that if the front coil springs were faulty, the rear coil springs are as well. The NHTSA campaign id number was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 111,943. In March of 2008, the contact received a Ford recall notice for NHTSA campaign id number 04V332000 (suspension:front:springs:coil springs). The contact urged the manufacturer to replace the rear suspension as well; however, the manufacturer stated that NHTSA only ordered the front suspension to be recalled. The dealer will only replace the front suspension according to the recall. The current mileage was 58,200 and failure mileage was 58,000.

Without warning, one rear spring failed upon entering vehicle while parked. Although sound was heard, responsible failed item was unknown at time. Metallic noise constantly emitted upon leaving driveway. Immediately drove 10 miles to dealer without incident. Spring failure resulted in groove in rear tire requiring replacement. Both springs were in need of replacement per dealer. Currently, noise is emitted from trunk area, dealer wants to replace struts. No work done yet. Reported to Ford today as well.

Rear coil springs on 2000 Taurus should be included in the recall of the front springs. Mine were replaced on 3/26/08 from Ford. But had to pay out of pocket for repair.

2000 Ford Taurus fractured rear spring. Loud clunk upon take off from stop. Vehicle occupied by 3 adult passengers and adult driver, no weight in trunk. Vehicle mileage: 86,733 mi. Correctly driven and maintained. Broken springs replaced by repair shop 02/23/2008.

Passenger side rear spring fractured, driver side is cracked and ready to fracture. No damage to the tire but I would imagine this is a direct result of living in a region where salty roads are normal everyday life and there is only a recall on the front springs so I guess I am out the $500 it going to cost to fix it.
