The failure is a broken left rear spring, requiring replacement of both rear springs. The old parts are not available. I would not say that the broken spring in my particular case caused immediate danger as the spring was still in the spring seat, however it is cause to fail a pa state safety inspection, and could have become dangerous if the spring was not replaced. The vehicle had 99,600 miles at the time of the failure. I can't pinpoint any specific events other than almost 100,000 miles of use in the salt belt. It is a common failure on the Taurus, and mine broke later than many others. The front springs (which have not broken on my car) are covered under recall...the rears should be as well.

I noticed that after installing four brand new tires on my 2001 Ford Taurus, that the vehicle pulled to the right dramatically while driving. The alignment was just done as well. I also noticed that the rear of the vehicle sat extremely low. Further investigation found that the rear coil spring on the right side had snapped at the base of strut. Front springs have a recall, why not the front. I am aware of the problems on this subject as I am formerly a service advisor for Ford. This is an all too common problem and does pose a safety problem!!!! this is true as the vehicle fails nysi and makes vehicle undriveable. Ford will not repair, yet there are hundreds, if not thousands of the same exact concern. My vehicle is in perfect operating condition and cared for well. This should not happen! apparently until someone dies, Ford and the government will not do anything about this. My 2001 Impala and my 2002 cavalier both had well over 100K, never had this problem and they were in the salt states their entire operating lives!! there must be something done now please. I am forced to repair the vehicle at my own cost for something that is well known by the government and Ford.

At time of state inspection: Rear drivers coil spring failure causing damage to rear tire. Estimated @ $397 for the coil and labor, plus $125 for new tire. Mechanic said rear passenger spring is not far behind.

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Taurus. In August of 2007, the contact noticed that the tires were wearing for no apparent reason. The rear tires were especially worn. All four tires were replaced. In October of 2008, all four tires were replaced again. A private mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the rear coil springs caused the rear tires to wear. The repair of the rear coil springs would cost $800. The manufacturer stated that there was no recall for the rear coil springs; therefore, they would not assist with the repair. The vehicle has not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were 100,000.

I had my car inspected today and found out both rear springs on the struts were broken. When researching the problem, I've found out this is common in 2001 Taurus sedans. This is a dangerous defect and I don't understand how a recall could be made for the front struts but not the back. A rear tire popping at 73 mph because of a broken spring breaking loose is just as dangerous as a front tire.

Inspection of suspension on my 2001 Ford Taurus by tire shop on 11 Oct 08 revealed both rear springs are broken. Internet sites list numerous incidents of tires being punctured by broken springs. I guess not enough people have died in order to force Ford to recall this very dangerous condition? you would think Ford or the news media would inform the public about this potentially fatal defect. I really can't think of a more serious condition that would justify an organization like yours. Thank you dan archer

2001 Ford Taurus rear coil springs broke on both sides. Very common complaint on this car although Ford won't issue a recall. They have issued a recall for the front coil springs but refuse to do the same for the rear.

I have a 2001 Ford Taurus ses sdn. I looked on Ford web site for recalls and to my surprise there where none for rear suspension coil springs, this is the 4th coil spring that has broken on this car and I have only had the car for 4 years. I just drive to and from work with this many breaks there has to be some kind of engineering or parts defect, this should not even be happening, I could see it if I hauled stuff in the car over a period of time again I just drive. I see you have done an investigation and closed your case last year. I tell you that there are alot of other one's that had to been breaking I am sure that none of my 4 have reached your complaints or any other complaints. I am partially disabled and I can not afford $300 - $400 dollar car bills to get this fixed every time it breaks down.. ron paul

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that both rear coil springs fractured. One of the rear corners of the vehicle was leaning extremely low. Through online research, he discovered various complaints for the same issue from other consumers. The spring also became dislodged from its normal position. He has not taken the vehicle to the dealer; however, the manufacturer stated that there was no recall on the rear springs and offered no assistance. The current mileage was 129,735 and failure mileage was approximately 129,600.

I have a 2001 Ford Taurus ses. About 5 months ago (~90 K miles) my front passenger side spring broke. The spring was replaced under recall. Yesterday (~103 K miles), I found the rear driver side coil spring also cracked open and hanging very near to the tire. This car drives 98% on I-94 at a speed of 75mph. Thank god the broken spring did not pop my tire open. Dealer checked and found both the rear springs broken. A $385 estimate is given for just replacing the spring (not the struts). I checked on the internet and found this is a very common problem in Taurus. Ford should come forward and put a recall on the rear springs too.

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Taurus. The contact heard a thumping sound and took the vehicle to a local mechanic. He was informed that the rear coil springs fractured. The mechanic replaced both rear coil springs in February and August of 2008. The coil springs currently need to be replaced again. The contact has scheduled an appointment for August 12, 2008 to have the repairs made. He called the dealer and they stated that there was a recall on the front coil springs, but not the rear. The recall number was unknown. The failure mileage was 43,000 and current mileage was 50,000.

I was parking my car when I heard a loud bang come from the rear of the car. I didn't find anything wrong after looking under the car. Later when I attempted to drive away I heard a scraping noise coming from the rear of the car. I thought it might be the brakes so I had it towed to a repair shop. After the mechanic inspected the vehicle, he told me both rear springs were broken and the scraping noise was the broken left rear spring rubbing on the tire. I was lucky that I wasn't driving otherwise the broken spring would have eventually cut the tire.
