Rear spring broke and killed rear tire, almost people in the car.

Drove the car normally, and it does have some mileage on it, but upon reading online I see that this is a very common failure. Failure: Rear strut springs cracking or breaking into multiple pieces. I can see where parts where out, but they should not break. Rear spring broke and damaged tire (sidewall). If I had been going faster, say highway speeds this could have resulted in a pretty significant accident. I was lucky. There is clearly a defect with such a high number of these springs breaking. Today found out that my 2001 Ford Taurus (about 76K) rear right breaking coil springs broken during a service. The broken spring almost touch the tire. I was lucky it did not broke the tire. I was told to replace both rear springs and would cost more than $1000 dollars. It is a safe issue.

My most recent contact with Ford was highly unpleasant and discouraging. I own a 2001 Ford Taurus with 80,000 miles that had 2 front coil springs and 1 rear coil spring break. I contacted Ford customer service to inquire what I needed to do regarding the recall on the coil springs; I gave my VIN # to the agent and was told that this car does not have any recalls and Ford could not offer me any service for the broken springs. I then contacted airport Ford in florence, ky and explained what I was told by Ford customer service and the 3 broken coil springs, they told me I could not be helped since Ford customer service said that there was not any recalls on this vehicle. Recall 04V332000 recalled the front coil springs and extended the warranty to 10 years or 150,000 mile, which this car is still covered. Rather than continue driving an unsafe vehicle, I decided to get the car fixed. I had the coil springs, wheel bearings, ball joints, tie rods, drive shafts, and rotors replaced on this car. The 2 broken front coil springs destroyed each of these components by placing unnecessary stress on these components. The rear coil spring was inches away from puncturing the tire of this vehicle; this was an accident waiting to happen. I believe that at a minimum the front coil springs should have been replaced by Ford due to the recall and extended warranty on these fractured springs; this cost me $343.12. I feel that Ford should cover the total cost of this repair to make this vehicle whole again at my cost of $986.28. Ford Motor Company's response to this complaint will make or break our mutual relationship. I look forward to hearing your response and hope a mutual agreement can be reached.

I don't know what lead up to the failure of my strut springs on my 2001 Ford Taurus. I had not hit any potholes, had any extreme weight in the back, or any other issues that could have caused this to happen. I am a fairly good driver with a great driving record. Upon replacing my back brakes I was told about my strut springs being broke and they needed to be fixed immediately. The springs had not be broken for very long before having them replaced. The parts alone were $300 (not including labor, the springs are currently being replaced) and due to the broken springs I had to replace both back tires at $100 a piece. An alignment may need to be done now also. The old parts/springs should be available.

Ford has recalled the front suspension springs on my 2001 Ford Taurus 80000 miles. But my rear spring fractured and nearly caused an accident with my four children in the car. I feel if the front springs are faulty then the backs are just as dangerous!!

I took my 2001 Ford Taurus to a local dealer to have a mandatory state inspection performed. The service advisor informed me that one of the rear coil springs was cracked and he said both rear coil springs need to be replaced immediately. I was told to stop driving the vehicle because the broken spring could puncture a tire, causing an accident. New rear coil springs were ordered and will be installed by the dealer on 6/23/10. I will ask to keep the old parts. My car was part of the 04S17 recall for the front coil springs. Shields were installed below the front springs on 5/10/05, at 44,356 miles. The rear coil springs were not included in this recall, but maybe they should have been.

The parts are not available, however, I personally saw the left rear spring in the car before it was replaced.

I have managed to catch this problem before having the misfortune of having to replace both rear tires. I am a certified state inspector for the state of Pennsylvania and I don't know about you guys but I see this as being a very dangerous and a pricey repair problem that has seemed to be happening quite often in the Ford Taurus 2001 model. Im currently aware that Ford recalled the front springs but it seems that the rear springs are exactly the same. There is definitely a durability issue with the front springs and it seems rear springs are made up of the same materials resulting in identical breakage and the rear coil springs are not to be overlooked. How often do you have a coil spring break on a mid sized car during normal driving" or even both coin springs breaking almost simultaneously" almost never.... I hope that Ford rear springs that came stock with the 2001 Taurus are put under recall because if not I can only guess that the tire company's have many unhappy Ford customers heading their way with torn tires from rear coil springs breaking and puncturing tires and also some very costly suspension repairs. I ask you not take this suspension concern lightly. Look at Toyota. Let make sure that Ford is aware of this problem and have them issue a recall for these flawed rear coil springs.

Coil springs on the Ford Taurus are breaking. A recall has been done on the front, but not on the back springs. The springs are made of defective material -- hairline cracks can be seen on the spring. The portion of the spring that separates shows that the crack in the spring has oxidized at points before the complete break. This is not a rust problem!! the metal used for these springs is extremely defective. In the portion that broke on my car lodged in the tire, and I was able to thoroughly inspect the metal and saw many hairline cracks. The front spring broke on my car in Feb. 2009 and the rear spring broke in March 2010. I was lucky and was not moving on the highway when the springs broke. My front tire was sliced through and blew out. The front springs were replaced, but I had to pay for the tire. Yesterday, my back right rear spring broke. I understand from the recall information the back springs were not recalled. Why not?? please have this problem corrected before there is a terrible accident on the highway by an unsuspecting driver of a defective vehicle! at 60 mph, a tire blowing would not allow time for the driver to make any corrective action.

I have a 2001 Ford Taurus SE. All four of the suspension coil springs are broken and one of the broken springs had an end which protrued and had rubbed a groove into the tire (inside rear) portion damaging the sidewall of my tire rendering the tire useless.

Routine driving is suburbs - back coil spring broke in 2001 Taurus - this has been a huge issue and Ford is not helping out. There is a recall on he front springs, so they were replaced for free, but the back ones cost my 83 year old mother $1000. Please doing something about this. My brother had a 2003 and the same thing happened. No recall, so he had to pay all of it. I once had a 2000 and when it broke it blew out the tire and I almost killed me, my family and about 10 other people on the highway. This is as bad as the Toyota thing.

2001 Ford Taurus - 74,000 miles - both rear springs are broken and will have to be replaced. The mechanic said he sees a lot of these broken springs in the Taurus line. He said quite often they will tear into the tire and cause severe damage or an accident.
