About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
I own a 2002 Ford Taurus which I bought from my father. It only has 27320 miles. On September 12, 2005, I had trouble starting the car. Once started, it would not run very long. Luckily, I was right across the street from a Ford dealer. I left it to be checked. The dealer called and said the fuel pump needs to be replaced. This cost me $100 deductible since it was past the time limit of the original warranty but under the mileage. I own a 2001 Mercury Sable with 65000 miles, on its 3rd fuel pump and I also own a 2002 Ford Taurus with 27000 miles, on its 2nd fuel pump.

Car was driven for approx. 100 miles, gas was low, so stopped to refill. When car was restarted, the car hesitated then sounded choked like it was not getting gas. Revved car to try to 'clear' system. Problem continued, at worst when idling. After a few minutes, engine light came on, so I turned off the car and called Ford dealer. Wrecker driver came out, revved car a few more times (approx. 3000 RPM) small backfire out of muffler each time. Problem seemed to go away. Wrecker driver blamed 'baffles' in muffler? drove car another 200 miles home. Three days later, after driving a bit, parked for short time then restarted car, same problem reoccurred.
