The first incident my brother was alone and driving the car. He accelerated after stopping for a traffic signal. Within about 50 yards the car continued to accelerate up to 4000 RPM. He pulled off to a turning lane and had to hold his foot on the brake to avoid hitting another vehicle. Finally he put the car in park. The engine did not slow down until he put the car back in drive. Since then the accelerator has taken control three different times at about 40 mph. Most recent incident was on 4/18/2012, mileage 36140. We were riding home from church. My brother pressed the accelerator to about 45 mph from a stop sign intersection and the engine revved up to 4000 RPM again. We had to pull off the road, turn the engine off and on 3 times before it was drivable.

On three separate occasions, while driving between 30-40 mph, the throttle "stuck". I was not using cruise control in any of these cases. It was difficult to get the car to slow down - required extreme brake pressure - when I shifted into neutral, the engine RPM went well above 3000 RPM. I shut off the engine, waited a minute or two, and restarted the car. Everything seemed to be completely normal. This happened two more times over the next several weeks. In each case when I shut off the engine and restarted it, all seemed to be normal. I took the car to a local auto mechanic, and he was unable to replicate my experience. He said he suspected the problem was related to the cruise control, and that a repairs could be several hundred dollars. Or he could simply disconnect the cruise control. I chose the later.

The issue started as a throttle sticking closed. This required a harder than normal push to get the throttle to open and increase engine speed. This eventually turned into the throttle sticking open and not returning to idle. The on the road fix was to push quickly on the throttle pedal a couple times to get the throttle to release to idle. This also necessitated riding the brakes to keep the cars speed under control. Over time the issue became worse, with the throttle sticking open more often. What I found when investigating the issue was that the cruise control cable fitting at the throttle linkage was disconnected. The fitting would snap back onto the proper place but was very loose and would pop back off easily when the throttle was actuated. I used a plastic tie-wrap to tighten the locking mechanism in place. Another item that I found was a lot of varnish where the throttle butterfly met the throttle body (inside the throttle body) at/near idle. This contributed to the sticking closed/open issue. I used carb cleaner while the engine was running to clean the throttle body around the butterfly, and outside the throttle body on the linkage. The issue at this point has not returned. I do feel there is an issue with the connector at the end of the cruise control cable. Since it seems to be affecting others about the same mileage, it seems to be a wear issue of an under designed connector. I don't know if the varnish build up (amount) is out of the ordinary, but have not had the sticking throttle issue on any other car I have owned. I could see this causing an accident for others that may not understand the mechanics of what is happening.

Numerous times, when the foot was removed the accelerator, the engine did not return to idle but continued as if your foot was still on the accelerator. Would have to apply brakes and get off the road. Extremely hard to stop if going very fast. Kill the engine, raise the hood and barely touch throttle control where the accelerator cable is attached and it would snap back to the idle position. This has happened at least 7 or 8 times. Extremely dangerous!

The vehicle would accelerate while driving and while at stop. Driver could not brake to deactivate cruise or put car in neutral to slow down. Rpms revved very high. Driver had to keep both feet on brake to keep car from moving when at stop. Both taken to Ford dealership for work. Different things were done to prevent. I have recently read an article on investigation into this same problem. I felt it important to relay this information.

Hello my wife's Taurus has recently started to lurch forward when she starts it. This happens about every third or fourth time the vehicle is started. Another thing we have noticed that may be related is that when the car is running while in park say at a drive through, when putting it into drive, there is a lag time in the transmission engaging into drive then when it does engage it pops into drive as if I were to pop the clutch and it lurches forward.

My car accelerated starting at 30 mph and kept climbing. I got it stopped with much effort in the middle of the road. When I restarted it, the engine raced uncontrollably. It was checked by my boyfriend (a auto service manager for 20 years) and found the cruise cable was loose but holding the accelerator. He disconnected the cable to the side and drove it ok. Then the cable slide back into place and it did it again. It you check the chat rooms you will find that many people have had the same problem!!!. the cost of repair has kept me from getting it repaired and the dealers refuse to even goodwill repair it, knowing that it was a common problem. I am afraid to drive the car, but it is the only vehicle I have.

The car would speed up by itself from fault of throttle control assembly, alternator had to be replaced, windshield wiper hose assembly, the ac compressor had to be completely replaced, accumulator or receiver drier had to be replaced, as well as replacement of the compressor drive belt, evaporator orifice belt, serpentine belt tensioner, idler pulley, belt tensioner, on another recent occasion, the Ford was idling high and when driving, would speed up to around 4000 to 4500 rpms, on its own replacement of gasket all spark plugs, valve assembly, and another kit 11794 to counter the revving engine and throttle.. also the power steering was off in the car, and it could not maintain an alignment, as you drove the steering wheel would jerk and shake. Odd noises emanating from the left and right rear of the car resembling a wheel bearing also will probably result in further repairs. The work was done at mileage 85462. Today it is 102K and the Ford keeps up with its seeming reputation of being "found on road dead"... or "fix or repair daily". today completed by a Ford dealer and a military shop, the torque converter is broken. The car will start and rev, but when placed in drive or reverse it will not engage and remains in place.
