The contact owns a 2005 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 mph, the vehicle accelerated independently to 55 mph. The contact applied the brake pedal on multiple occasions; however, the vehicle continued to accelerate. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the cruise control cable became disconnected from the throttle linkage which locked the speedometer at 55 mph. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 196,560.

Unintended acceleration twice within a matter of minutes. Both times the vehicle required shifting to neutral to stop. The second time the engine continued to rev at 4,000 rpms even after restarting the vehicle. The local tech stated that the problem had something to do with the cruise control cable and throttle. The problem appears to be fixed now, but this was an extremely dangerous situation. P.S. ? there are several online blogs discussing the same issue for the same year, make, and model.

Stopped at light, car started to rev RPM's. could not hold on brakes enough to stop moving. Went through red light around two cars as speed reached about 70mph. Both feet on brakes, could smell them burning, got to side of road and slammed into park and turned car off. Wow, the scariest thing I have ever experienced. If there was heavy traffic someone would have been killed, no doubt in my mind.happened on thruway two weeks earlier, only lasted a minute, thought the mat was stuck, it was not. Called Ford and they could not help as there is no recall. Took it to Ford dealer, they disconnect crusie cable. Don't know if this was really the problem, just got it back. I am very fearful to drive it, because you never know when it will do it again. Please someone make Ford wake up about this problem before someone is killed. I wouldn't feel right trading it in, for fear of someone else getting killed.

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Taurus. The contact stated while driving approximately 50 mph with the cruise control engaged, the vehicle suddenly accelerated up to 60 mph. The tachometer began to display a very high reading and the contact applied the brakes. The brakes would not disengage the cruise control, but the vehicle began to decelerate. The contact also stated that it was very difficult to stop the vehicle because the engine continued to rev. The vehicle was eventually pulled over to the side of the road and shut off. Upon restart, the engine continued to rev. The vehicle was driven safely to an authorized dealer, where the throttle body and the cruise control cable were repaired. The failure mileage was 79,000. The consumer stated when restarting the vehicle, with the gear in park and the parking brake engaged, the vehicle tried to accelerate in a wild manner, reaching five on the tachometer, but the vehicle remained in its position due to the precautions, she took prior to restarting it. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technicians were unable to get the cruise control to engage. However, later on in the day, the cruise control finally engaged. Updated 12/30/11
