After driving on highway, usually about 20 minutes, when I slow, transmission will not come out of first gear.
if I stop; let car cool, the transmission works properly again. Sometimes, after running and I slow, the car will shudder and stall; then, when it restarts, will not shift out of first.

On coming to a stop, the transmission went into neutral. After sitting for a while, it then might go into drive/might not.
Ford apparently knew of the problem, but continued to use the defective part into 1998.
The problem was an aluminum reverse/first clutch housing. The housing failed under cold temp operation/high pressure, causing the housing to cock sideways, locking it in place.....The housing was cracked along the circumference, allowing it to cock sideways, locking in place.
Ford replaced it with a steel housing, and solved the problem, but not until 1998, I understand.
Evidently Ford knew of the problem as the replacement part was of steel, not aluminum! Part cost , retain about $10.00. repair cots, - remove, repair, and replace trans about $1500.
As car was way out of warranty, Ford denied any responsibility.
