While trying to start, engine will sputter and shut off, and sometimes backfire. This happens off and on. After a couple of hours the van will start and run ok, until I stop at a store or work, and will not start again (after many sputtering tries) for a couple of hours again. Any suggestions?

Engine would die right after ignition. Would spit and sputter, idling at very low RPM if I kept pushing gas pedal and slowly released. If I could get it in gear w/out it stopping, then it would run until I stopped for a traffic light etc. This problem comes and goes, worse in cold weather.

We bought this van used back in 2003 with 60,000 miles on it and at 92,000 the engine locked up and died on the side of the road. The oil light came on and then 1 minute later it just died and never restarted. Routinely performed 3000 mile oil change and maintenance. Also have had several other things replaced on it in the last year. It would have cost 5000 dollars to replace with a new remanufactured engine. We are getting a salvage yard engine for 2000 dollars and trading it in as soon as its fixed.

This problem came with no waring, other then engine light came on,, had Auto Zone check with their computer, said it was Cylinders #1&6 misfiring. Had appointment to have it serviced , parked it and would not restart. Mechanic said it was broken rod and engine seized up, remedy new or rebuilt engine. The cost is more then value of car...
