Windstar SEL

  • Automatic transmission
  • 108,420 miles

In August 2019, I took my 2003 Ford Windstar for state inspection. The owner showed me the rust on the Suspension Cross Member/Subframe. He said by next year the subframe would not pass inspection.

Windstar Sport 3.8L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 129,742 miles

Right front sub-frame corroded where the control arm is connected to support the wheel assembly. The arm separated causing the axle to pull out of the transmission, then loss of steering. Was travelling slow so no major accident. Could have been serious on a freeway at high speed.

Ford does not have a recall on this yet. NHTSA is aware or this. Need more complaints or injury to get action.

Ford does have a recall on the rear axle for the exact same corrosion problem in "salt-states" and Canada.
