brake vacuum pump exploded

We were very lucky when this issue happened, my husband was driving the car and was able to get it stopped. When the brake vacuum pump exploded, he lost the ability to easily brake. It happened at a 4 way stop where cross traffic is going 60+MPH. He is a big guy so he was able to stand on the brakes to make it stop. Had I been driving, I am not big enough to have been to stop it. I have 3 kids with my youngest being 1YO. This could have been so much worse had I been driving with my kids. We could have majorly wrecked or died. GM is aware of the issue with this part and there is no active recall on this part. something needs to be done before people DIE!
