  • 54,000 miles
While I was driving on the highway at approximately 60 mph, the power steering stopped working, two warning lights lit up and received two service messages on the screen, one relating to the power steering the other relating to the stabilitrak. Fortunately, the stretch of highway was a straight drive, no turns, at the time this happened. After turning off the vehicle and then restarting, the power steering returned to normal operation and would work for some period of time, but would then would stop working without any notice. This has happened 3 times in the last 75 miles that I have driven. The truck has only been driven a total of 54,000 miles. Given that this happened multiple times, I have stopped driving the vehicle. It is now with a GMC dealer waiting to be repaired. The symptoms of my problem seem to be very similar to the ODI investigation rq 19-001 when I searched for GMC Canyon power steering issues.

My power steering stopped working while driving around a curve at approximately 35 mph. Fortunately, I was able to maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road and stop by applying significant physical force to the steering wheel. The instrument panel displayed two warnings. The first indicated the power steering system required service and the second indicated the traction control system required service. I then turned the ignition off and then restarted the vehicle. The power steering and traction control warnings were no longer present and the power steering was again functional. I then contacted the dealer and arranged for them to diagnose the problems the following morning. Their service record indicated a code C0545 (steering torque sensor corrupt) had been logged. They cleared the error code and indicated they could not find anything else wrong. The service record also stated that "if the issue reoccurs, advised on steering gear $1800". I picked up the vehicle that afternoon and once again experienced the same issue at approximately 65 mph while on the way home. As before, I pulled off to the side of road, turned off the ignition, restarted the vehicle and drove the rest of the way home without further incident.

I just purchased a used 2015 GMC Canyon. A day after purchasing, on startup, the dash had a warning saying "service power steering, drive with care." I could not drive at all. I couldn't turn the wheel to leave. After a few minutes it started working again. I feel lucky that this happened while the vehicle was stationary, and not at highway speed as this could have been deadly.

Driving at 65mph on Sunday, 2/9/2020. Loss of power steering while on the 5 freeway. Very scary! luckily not many cars and had to pull over to the side of the road. Waited a couple of minutes and restarted the car and was able to drive on the freeway again since there were no side roads that would take me to my destination. It happened again when I got home but luckily I was off of the freeway at the time. On Monday, 2/10/2020 it happened again but luckily traffic was going less than 30 mph and I was able to slowly pull off of the 10west freeway.

While driving vehicle on Jan 31, 2020 the power steering and stability control shut off while traveling at 70mph. This was extremely dangerous. This is the second time in less than two weeks. I understand gnc did a recall for this problem but did not cover my vehicle

While driving the electrical power steering goes out and so does 'stabilitrak.' Turning the car off and on again will some times reset the electrical issue and power steering will work fine, but the issue always comes back and some times no matter how many times you turn the car off and back on, the power steering will not come back on. I have paid to get this fixed at my local GMC dealership, but the same problem has persisted and the dealership is telling me to pay again for a fix.

The contact owns a 2015 GMC Canyon. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 mph and while making a right turn, the power steering fault message displayed in the instrument panel and the vehicle became difficult to maneuver. An unknown dealer was contacted and informed of the failure however, the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed nor repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 16V054000 (steering). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 46,000.

While driving on the highway at 65 mph the power steering and stability control went out. This resulted in significantly reduced steering and reduction in control of the vehicle. I was passing a tractor trailer at the time in a slight turn in the road. I came within inches of hitting the tractor trailer and significantly injuring myself, my child and damaging the vehicle. I was able to eventually pull off the road and restart the vehicle. The problem corrected itself after restart. I understand this is a known issue with the 2015 GMC Canyon and GMC only decided to recall some of the vehicles. Why would the NHTSA allow this serious safety issue to go uncorrected?

While driving power steering fail and message reading service power steering message displayed on dashboard along with service stabilatrac and message along with stabilatrac and traction control lights illuminated, at time of issue I was going around a turn in which I almost crashed as the steering wheel automatically went into the straight position. This is now happening multiple times a day and I have to put the truck in neutral and shut off and restart it in which sometimes it does not reset. GM says other truck was not included in the previous recall in which I am now having the same exact issues.

Power steering stopped working while driving. Truck was extremely difficult to turn and dangerous to drive. Problem was temporarily resolved by turning off the truck and restarting it. The symptom is exactly the same as those described in recall no. 16V054000, but I have been informed that my truck is not included in the recall.

Hi. this is my second formal complaint regarding intermittent loss of power steering, traction control, and stability control on my 2015 GMC Canyon. There have been recurring temporary losses of the aforementioned vehicle capabilities while the vehicle is in motion, leading to severely degraded vehicle performance, handling, and traction. In every case, warnings lights have displayed immediately before the loss of control. These lights have also 'turned-off' or reset when the vehicle was restarted. I have repeatedly brought my truck into authorized GMC service appointments soon after the warning lights and performance failures, or in one instance as the warning light was actively illuminated. Each time, the service department was not able to recreate the issue or pull any relevant service codes related to the problem. Needless to say, I do not believe the root cause issue has been adjudicated and I think this represents a clear and present danger to drivers of the 2015 GMC Canyon such as myself. While my truck was not part of the past recall, this seems strongly related to the prior steering gear connector recall.

Over the past three days our GMC Canyon has unexpectedly lost power steering as we were driving down the road. When the power steering goes out, the icons for stabilitrack and traction control also pop up on the instrument panel. Power steering is only restored by turning the engine off then back on again. This issue occurred 3 times within approximately 30 minutes today as we were driving between 45 and 60 mph on a two lane rural highway that was recently resurfaced. This vehicle was not included in the 2016 recall for a similar sounding issue.

This is the second time in 5 months that my steering went out on my 2015 GMC Canyon. The first time the dealership said it was an electronic harness issue even though there has been multiple reports of steering issues. This is very scary when this happens and needs to be recalled as soon as possible. I was driving and then all of a sudden steering shuts off and the stability light comes on.

  • 52,000 miles
The power steering became disabled while driving straight at highway speed in my 2015 GMC Canyon at 52K miles. I was forced to make an unsafe stop on the shoulder and it took several restarts to get the steering to enable again. Since this happened the first time it has started occurring intermittently while driving. This has made my vehicle unsafe to operate for me and other drivers on the road. GM claims that my vehicle is ineligible for the previous recall.

Two times in two days. Loss of complete steering. My son driving straight 45mph on paved road. Message on dash board read 'loss of power steering control' and the traction control and stabilitrak lights also came on. Could not even turn the steering wheel. Came to a stop asap. Shut off truck and restarted and was normal again. Very scary!! second time he was driving down the interstate at about 73mph and same thing happened with other vehicles near. Couldn't steer. Was able to keep to the right and get onto the shoulder and stop. Very very very scary!!!!!! shut truck off and turned again and everything worked again. Truck is parked and won't drive now. Dealer said this truck is not part of the recall even though it has the same exact problems. Very much a safety issue and could have died. GM must fix this horrific safety problem!!!!!!

While driving, power steering was disabled. Luckily not while turning. Stabilitrac was was engaged, but was forced to drive without power steering for appx. 30 minutes with a 3 month old and spouse. Once home, turned vehicle off, then back on to move it appx. 5-10 minutes later and power steering was back to working properly. Took vehicle to mechanic, was given GM recall bulletin 15595A and told he could not repair, I needed to call dealer. Called dealer and GMC customer service to be told by both that my VIN is not covered. Despite exact same symptoms GMC was not willing to diagnose without charge since vehicle is out of warranty. GMC refuses to confirm if my VIN may have been missed when recall issued without charging. Therefore leaving me the option to 1. pay fees and over priced dealer service charges to diagnose and address the same problem that affected other 2015 GMC Canyons or 2. risk the same issue while driving cross-state within a week due to work requirements and lack of availability of a 'company car.'
