Power steering goes out intermittently. Now several times in one day. Taking it to dealer. Seems similar to 2015 Canyon recall.

It's very annoying issue.
Driving the GMC Canyon 2016 and I suddenly lose the power steering and the steering wheels become really hard to make right or left turns.
I brought to the dealer and they couldn't figure out the problem.

So I am adding this for my dad, who is not very tech savvy. The same issue happened to him 3 months ago - took it to the dealer. Something "electrical" they "fixed". From all of the entries I saw on here - there are so many owners with the same EXACT issue as the 2015's that were recalled. He was on his way from Pittsburgh out to visit us on the other side of the state. Luckily this did not happen on the highway!!!! What is it gonna take for GMC to see that they did not correct the issue?

From the number of complaints and blogs on this; whatever recall they had and fix they installed back in 2015, did not fix a general fault with the electronic power steering. Calling today but from what i've heard from my repair man, the only fix is to replace the rack and pinion. Then it needs to be reprogramed by a dealer, then sent out to get the front realigned. Cost should easily approach 3K. The strut alone is $1875!
Update from Feb 13, 2023: Since my last comment called the dealer, said they had a car on the lift as we spoke and that customer was paying 3K to get it fixed. Essentially, that was the only thing they did; you complain and they replace the rack and charged you 3K. So took to another repair shop. He offered to do a full visual inspection, and check the connections. He did a full visual, found nothing wrong. Pulled the cable connections, cleaned them and reconnected. Sent it out and had it reprogrammed by another shop that does alignments and who has the GM software for their electric steering systems. He knew someone so they exist. FYI, our city has started installing speed bumps all over. I had hit one pretty hard a days prior to the problem occurring. Thinking that may have been the cause. So far, working fine. Repair guy hasn't charged me yet.
