Envoy

  • 100,000 miles
Speedometer erratic. Stays at 120mph at all speeds until vehicle is not driven. Driven again, does not work at all or is erratic showing multiple speeds. As an example, freeway speed of approximately 70 speedometer will read 0 at times, 40 at times or even may read 120, very erratic.

My speedometer stopped working. It used to either stay on 0 or go up to 90. I have been stopped several times for speeding because I can not determine my speed. Since that broke, I have also lost all of my other instruments, including gas... I ran out of gas on route 495 in the middle lane going about 60 mpg!!! thankfully I did not panic and was able to get my flashers on and move into the slow lane and then to the break down lane. I have had many people tell me this is a recall on the GMC pick up trucks but not the Envoy!!!! does someone need to get killed in order to have this corrected?

The speedometer and tachometer of the SUV began to indicate incorrect readings. The speedometer works fine until we go on the highway and travel with the cruise control set between 65-70. Then they will read the incorrect speed for a week or so then start working fine again. The tachometer needle just "hangs." I talked to 2 different repair shops who advised me that this is a common problem with Envoy's and trailblazers. The cost to do this is over $500 or more. It appears that several other 2004 GMC Envoy owners are experiencing this same problem. A recall should be in order. When I talked to the repair shops they said before they can correct the issue under my extended warranty is to see it happen. Each time I had an appt set it would start working before the appt date so there is nothing they can do. Very irritated that GMC doesn't address this now.

Around August 2012, the speedometer and tachometer of the SUV began to indicate incorrect readings. The speedometer goes weeks working fine, then will read the incorrect speed for months. The tachometer needle just "hangs." The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the dash cluster would need to be changed at a cost of at least $600, possibly more. The dashboard cluster was not changed. It appears that several other 2004 GMC Envoy owners are experiencing this same problem. A recall should be in order.

The instrument panel cluster on my GMC Envoy 2004 is defective as it is on a multitude of other GM models between 2003 and 2005. One of the consequences is that the speedometer will not work or will report a faulty reading while operating the vehicle. This is an unsafe driving condition and for some reason GM has not yet issued a recall on this problem for GMC Envoy of the year 2004 even though other years of this model and other models of GM vehicles have been recalled for this exact issue. Please help GM do the right thing by it's Envoy owners. We have certainly bailed them out enough. There is another potentially deadly consequence of this issue. If one were to be driving the vehicle at 60mph using cruise control and the speedometer were to all of a sudden peg itself to 20mph, there would be a sudden and abrupt acceleration as the computer in the car attempted to regain 60mph even though the vehicle was already at that speed. Thank you for your time and attention to this dangerous speed control issue.. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Envoy

  • 120,000 miles
The speedometer begins to give faulty readings. At first it was reporting approximately 20 miles per hour under actual speed. This almost caused a crash due to excessive unknown speed. In the last few days the speedometer starts at 60 mph and is off by approximately the same amount so when traveling 50 mph the speedometer reads 110 mph. This is a massive safety issue and there are numerous reports about this yet no recalls. How many people must be injured or killed before you take action.

I was on my way to work doing 40 mph when I looked down to check my speed and the speedometer stated that I was going 70 mph and it was going higher. I begin to slow down but the speedometer would not go any less than 70 mph, even when I parked my car at my job it was still reading 70 mph.

The instrument panel cluster on my 2004 GMC Envoy is defective. Tachometer shows incorrect readings, gas gauge does not work, lights flicker and dim, half of the radio lighting is out. I've researched this and have found this complaint is quite common. It seems that eventually I can expect the whole instrument cluster to fail!

My speedometer does not work in mt 2004 GMC Envoy. I understand that some of the GMC pickups had the same problem and it was handled as a recall. When it began, it would hang up at a range between 60-90 mph. It now just sits at 0. I have been stopped for speeding in local neighborhoods in Massachusetts, where I work for going anywhere between 5-15 mph over the speed limit. This has cost me money in fines and my auto insurance, it should be handled as a recall, GMC needs to step up to the plate. I inquired with my mechanic, and its about a $900 fix for me to repair!
