I am the owner of a 2005 GMC Envoy. On August 20, 2010, I took my car to fill up prior to taking a trip from Maryland to Virginia. Once I filled up, got in the car and turned on the ignition, the gas gauge did not move from empty to full. As I continued to drive (somewhere around 60 miles) the gas gauge moved to 1/2, then a 1/4 tank. It has been all downhill since. I took the car to the dealer on 10/25/10 (mileage was at 77263) and was told that it would cost over $1000 to repair the sensor which they are stating as the issue. Being out of warranty at this point, I have not had it repaired as I cannot afford this type of expense. I basically drive estimating my mileage after every fill up which is very dangerous. In December 2010, I got stranded because my car stalled on the entrance highway to I-95 without gas, thank god that I have aaa. Now I hear that there is an investigation into the GMC Envoy for this same exact problem. I have read several complaints from other owners regarding the same matter (see link below) www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2005/GMC/Envoy/fuel+system I also saw an article at: (link below regarding your investigation news.yahoo.com/S/nm/20110502/bs_nm/us_usa_autos_probes I contacted GMC who said that because the dealer identified the problem as a sensor issue (not a cluster issue) they can't help. Please help us. GMC should not be allowed to get away with this.

Envoy

  • 42,000 miles
The contact owns a 2005 GMC Envoy. The contact stated that after refueling the vehicle to half full to full capacity, the fuel level gauge would inaccurately read that the fuel tank was empty. When the tank was empty, the gauge would read that the tank was full causing the vehicle to stall. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer and an independent mechanic and they both advised the contact that the fuel sensor would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 42,000.

Envoy

  • 90,000 miles
The contact owns a 2005 GMC Envoy XLT. The contact stated the fuel gauge would display an inaccurate empty reading after refueling the vehicle. The dealer previously repaired the fuel floater valve in 2009 for the exact failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer once again who stated that the vehicle was not covered under warranty any repairs would be at the contacts expense. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 90,000.

As I was driving down the interstate I noticed that my fuel gauge started moving back and forth repeatedly. Originally it always said that I had a full tank of gas, but now it tends to read that I am almost out of gas even when I have just filled up.

Envoy

  • 65,000 miles
At 65,000 miles the fuel gauge failed without warning. Gauge dropped to empty immediately after a fill and has since remained there. Nothing has been done to correct the problem as I was told by the local GMC dealer it was out of warranty, it was not covered under past fuel gauge recalls, and I refuse to reward GMC for supplying faulty product by paying the quoted $800-$1000 to replace it. The safety consequences of running out of fuel are extensive, from slowing and being rear ended to being hit alongside the road while going for gas.

Envoy 4WD 6-cyl

Inaccurate fuel gauge reading. Car can run out of gas unless carefully monitored by operator. Gauge became faulty with time when car was 3.5 years old. At first when tank was filled, the empty light would come on and then suddenly register as full after approximately 20 miles of operation. Gauge now only registers 1/4th tank or not at all after tank is filled. Without careful watch, the car could run out of gas on a highway and be struck or cause significant problems. Dealer estimated cost of repair = $650 and stated that it was a common problem for this make and model. I do not wish to pay this exorbitant amount for repair. It appears from my research that this is a very dangerous problem and rampant with this make and model.

Purchased new from dealer 2005 GMC Envoy - fuel gauge reads empty - sometimes - it will tell you have more gas - most times it reads empty. I ran out of fuel on sat 4/30/11 - stuck going up a hilled entrance into a mall. There is no accurate way to tell how much fuel left in tank. Please force a recall for GMC instrument panel problems. Issue is widespread.

Fuel gauge just stopped working. Is always on E. even when I fill it up.. gas light constantly on and dinging. I know this is a problem in Envoy and I feel GMC should be liable for correcting the problem. Mileage range is huge so it is hard to travel and know when to get gas. Especially on the interstate when gas stations are not always in range.

I own a 2005 GMC Envoy and for the last two months have been dealing with a faulty fuel gauge....I saw online that a good number of other GM owners are having the same issue. My gauge just keeps reading emplty tank......even when totally filled, will reset to read quarter of tank of gas when it's still just about a full tank of fuel. Either bad sensor or brain box......made in china!!! any help..[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Please add our vehicle with a gas gauge that is faulty. Condition began last fall and we just escaped running out of gas the first time it happened. Fuel light indicates that the fuel is empty or near empty when in reality it is full or near full. Just the opposite happens when the light indicates fuel is in the tank when in reality, it is almost empty. Our local mechanic was not sure what the problem was the repair could approach $150. We now refuel when the trip odometer hits 300 or so miles.

Envoy

  • 77,000 miles
The fuel gauge on my 2005 GMC Envoy failed to correctly report the quantity of gas in the tank starting at about 30,000 miles. It always reports a value that I know is wildly inaccurate, and even sets off the low fuel alarm when I know the tank is nearly full. I stopped relying on the gas gauge a long time ago, because that would inevitably lead to the vehicle running out of fuel causing vehicle stall with no restart, with obvious safety implications. Instead, I fuel the vehicle on the basis of number of miles driven, an inherently flawed method with higher probability of failure. My dealer has advised me that repair would cost over $400.

2005 GMC Envoy fuel gauge inaccuracies. Hed to replace the fuel sensor. At dealership. Had less than 50,000 miles on vehicle when the problem occurred. Contacted GMC customer support to see if they would help with thecosts of repairing the vehicle. After 3 months of working with them they denied my request. Had to pay for the diagnostics and theinstall of the part which came to approx. $450.

Fuel gage started to read incorrectly after filling tank - initially would drop to empty and then read correctly after driving about 100 miles - now reads incorrectly all the time. After filling it will show empty and will never read more a quarter tank full.
