Envoy XL

  • 71,000 miles
The transmission would "clunk" upon starting and stopping. One day while driving there was a bang and then the gears would not shift from 1st to 2nd without revving the engine very high and then letting off the gas. The next morning there was no reverse. The dealer said it was the reverse sunshell gear that broke. It was replaced.

: the contact stated while exiting the expressway at 45 mph the vehicle lost all transmission control. The engine revved and the vehicle coasted to a stop. The vehicle was put into park however, the vehicle still rolled. The vehicle was towed to a dealer for inspection. Upon inspection the transfer case and module needed to be replaced. There is a NHTSA recall #01V334000, regarding the transmission and transfer case. The vehicle has the same problem as indicated in the recall however; it is not included in the recall due to the VIN. No repairs have been made.

In 10 days, had the transmission go out ($3200), exhaust manifold gaskets start leaking ($400), 4WD switch ($250), automatic transmission park lock in steering column ($250) and now I have a 4WD service light on. The dealer has been totally unhelpful. Although I am an engineer at a tier 1 U.S. auto supplier, I will be looking overseas for my next car.

My 2002 GMC Envoy seemed to be running fine. One day on the way home, I heard a loud bang and my RPM's seemed to go up. It almost made me swerve into oncoming traffic due to the distraction. When I got to where I was going, I found out that I had no reverse, and it shifted extremely hard between 1st and 2nd gear. Dealer told me they never heard of it, but it needed a sun gear, approximately $2,000 to fix. I opted for the new tranny for $3,200.

Envoy XL 4WD 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 31,000 miles
2002 GMC Envoy with 31,000 mile experienced transmission failure (no reverse). The dealer said that it was the "sunshell" gear and normally would cost $2300 to repair, but, out of the goodness of their heart they would only charge me a $500 deductible (I assume it is on some type of warranty that they have) plus fluids, so my grand total would only be around $600. On the surface this seemed like a good deal but after a little research it turns out there are many other Envoy and trailblazer owners who have had the same problem. It is clear that there is some sort of defect and appears GM has it covered under some type of warranty and is sticking the consumer with their $500 deductible when they should be paying for the entire repair.

The transmission on my 2002 Envoy XLT went out this morning on my way to work. I barely missed having an accident while passing a semi and injuring myself and others. The Envoy has 69,000 miles on it and the transmission should have lasted much longer. After exploring some web sites (townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.EF15323) I found that other owners of Envoy and trailblazers also experienced transmission failure. An immediate recall should be issued. Cost for replacing the transmission is $1,500. We were so thrilled with the Envoy and brag about it all the time. We were considering buying a new one next year but we won't if we do not get reimbursed for this transmission repair. Signed daniel and diana trabel 812-623-3440 very disappointed Envoy owners

I have had three total transmission failures. The first was in Dec, 2002 at 14,000 miles. The second was in Dec 2003 at 36,000 miles. The third was Jan 2005 at 58,000 miles. Each time the dealership repaired the car but can not determine the reason for the failure. The last failure was with my five year old granddaughter in the car and we were pulling into oncoming traffic. Since they have not determined the root cause of the failure I see no reason to think it will not happen again.
