U.S. department of transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Office Of Defects Investigation nvs-210, 400 7th street, sw I am writing your Agency because I feel there is a serious automotive safety issue I feel you are responsible for vigorously addressing. I recently bought a used 2000 Jimmy (59,000) miles and while browsing your web sight I thought I would check the recall history of the model. I found that there were two safety recall campaigns that seemed to directly apply to the car I purchased. They are identified as nhsta campaign id numbers 01V364000 (brake lights etc.) and 00V228003 (seat belts). Following up on this I called GM (10/3/05) to find out if the car I purchased had the safety items fixed. I supplied the VIN [xxx] number to the GM representative and she refused to give me any information at all, saying that she would not because I was not the original owner. I can not understand that rationale and it indicates to me that either the items were not fixed or GM has inadequate record keeping and doesn't even know. None the less you have seen fit to issue a recall for these safety items and I fail to see how GM's refusalto disseminate knowledge about the safety status of a vehicle they manufactured furthers the mission you are charged with. It certainly would take less time to tell me the status of my vehicle than the amount of time their representative spent stonewalling me. I am seriously concerned now and request that you follow up with GM so that I can have an affirmative answer that my vehicle meets mandatory safety standards. The representative I talked to identified herself as sara roberts at 1-866-952-4368, ext 57063 and was originally polite but then became increasingly arrogant. I informed her that I intended to take up the issue with NHTSA but that clearly was not of any.
