Jimmy 6-cyl

  • 102,000 miles
The contact owns a 2001 GMC Jimmy. While driving approximately 25 mph, the contact detected smoke coming from the steering column. Suddenly, the rear brake light system activated without the brakes being applied. The brake lights remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. The failure occurred intermittently and the dealer was notified of the malfunctions. The vehicle was previously repaired according to NHTSA campaign id number 08V231000 (exterior lighting:brake lights'switch); however, the remedy has not corrected the issue. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 102,000. Updated 10/06/09 the consumer stated he purchased the parts and had the dealer replace the combination and ignition switch. Updated 10/08/09

I purchased our 2001 Jimmy on 2/05/01 (new). We experienced the first of 7 electrical system failures on 10/12/01. On 10/12/01 the brake light switch failed and was replaced. On each of the three following dates; 7/26/02, 6/18/03 and 7/02/03 the ignition switch was replaced after the vehicle failed to start or stopped running during operation. It was towed to a GMC dealer on each of those occasions. On 8/08/03 the vehicle again would not start and was towed to the dealer. We were told the problem this time was the battery. On 8/23/03 the fuse block was replaced after the vehicle stopped running during operation. Again towed to a dealer. Again on 10/10/03 the fuse block was replaced after the vehicle stopped running during operation. Again towed to a dealer.

At 12,270 miles we had no brake lights taken to the dealer and he replaced the turn signal and said that was the problem. That was in June. On July 6, 2001 the dash board lights flashed several times lighting all of the guages showing that the engine was not running, but it was still running. Engine light stayed on. Took the vehicle to the dealer who found multiple trans dtc's internal failure replace ignition switch and performed relearn. I am concerned that this vehicle will have more defects, please let me know if others are having the same problem. Thank you.
