It started with the fuel gauge fluctuating between full and empty with a full tank of gas and the ABS and brake light on dash lighting up for apparently no reason. Then it started giving me trouble starting and making a weird whining noise. I checked all the fluid levels and fuses, everything was ok. I was at the camp(middle of nowhere) at night when I noticed that there were sparks coming from around the area of the starter when my husband tried to start it.(it just happened to be dark and I was sitting with a view of the right wheel well) I checked the wires and found what might have been a break in the insulation, taped it and the sparks quit. Had no choice but to drive it home the next day as there was no phone service. Started right up, and drove fine, except for the low whinny noise that no one could pinpoint. I was almost home when the transmission started to slip. I brought it to our mechanic who replaced the transmission but none of us can figure out what the devil is causing the electrical problems. Before the transmission went out the tow/ haul button didn't do any thing, now the light actually comes on-when it feels like it, but I can't get it to go off. The gas gauge is still acting nuts and the ABS and brake light still come and go. Please post instructions for troubleshooting this thing!

I just want to let you know about a little problem I'm having with my 2001 GMC 4X4 truck. There are two certain grocery stores I go to and when I start my truck back at these stores the gas gauge goes to empty and the gas pedal locks up and can not be pushed down.then I have to turn off the engine, then when I get the gas pedal freed then start the truck back the gas pedal is ok. I'm thinking my truck's computer is getting confused with some kind of micro waves or something coming from the stores electrical devices. I'm wondering if anyone else has these problems.

I bought a GMC Sierra C-1500 pickup truck, new in 2001. In Sept '05, the ABS light came on & a humming noise could be heard even after the ignition was turned off. The odometer was at 50,000 miles, at that time. The problem was the ebcm shorted-out and needed to be replaced. Now, 31,000 miles & 3 years later (81,000 total miles), it shorted-out again & needed to be replaced. The cost of this part alone is $1,000 (+ over $200 installation). That part isn't even subjected to normal 'wear & tear' like brakes, because it's not a moving part. It's a computer module that controls the anti-lock brakes, that is vital in case of emergency braking, which luckily I haven't needed to use. I don't know if the ebcm (part) is defective itself or if something else is causing it to short out, but I don't think this part should fail, this often. Requiring a third ebcm in 7 years, in my opinion, is unacceptable. I've contacted GMC & I don't think I received a legitimate reason for the failure of the part'just a poor excuse. His reasoning was that my vehicle is 7 years old & has 81,000 miles, that it's acceptable for a computer module, which controls the anti-lock brakes (a safety issue), to malfunction & need replacing twice. That 'reason' was totally absurd in my opinion. Mileage shouldn't come into play because it's an electronic part not a moving part. If they want to justify it because the truck is 7 years old'.it was the part that failed, not the truck & it was only 3 years old and only 31,000 miles had been added, when it shorted-out again! so, they shouldn't even be talking about the vehicle itself'just the faulty part which happens to control a very important safety feature!

First thing was that my gas gauge started to fluctuate. Up until the point that I didn't know how much fuel I had in my tank. Then my instrument cluster started to go. It started to fluctuate then dies from time to time. RPM's, speed, gas, oil press, park, neutral, reverse, drive, 1,2,3, and miles driven cannot see anymore. Everything died the first time when I was driving home from work in the middle of the night on a dark road. Called dealer and dealer said it will cost me almost $600, which is ridiculous considering the fact that I just paid off the vehicle. I know that this is a repetitive problem with GM vehicles and am still wondering why GM won, T recognize it except only for '03 and '04 model trucks with under 70,000 miles. I bet you if people knew that one day their cluster would die under 7 years they would rather place their investment in a vehicle elsewhere. If I was stationed stateside when this problem started 2 1/2 years ago; I would have had the dealer take care of it. //signed// concerned owner.

The vehicle had an electrical short which caused the door ajar alarm to sound and the dashboard gauges to malfunction.
