Sierra 1500

  • 25,000 miles
The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. While the vehicle was operated, the service power steering warning indicator illuminated and the power steering failed. The failure was intermittent. The dealer could not replicate the failure. A year earlier, the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering motor needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 14V719000 (steering) as a possible solution; however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 25,000.

This issue is related to stabilitrak, the onboard computing system. When on the interstate, loss of power can occur. Usually at high speeds, the power just 'flickers' on and off, some times repeatedly. The breaking mechanism seems to be somewhat affected by this. At slower speeds, the same problem can occur, but the steering wheel locks up and forces my truck to turn hard to the left. Each time the problem occurs, "stabilitrak error" and "loss of traction control" or something along the lines of "loss of power, danger" will appear -- although, it is usually just something relating to "stabilitrak". I've nearly been in an accident ~3 times. It's no question a danger to the driver and to pedestrians. GM has been getting sued like crazy, and it's pretty clear they are avoiding this issue because of this.

Steering wheel springs/snaps (hard) in the opposite direction that the wheel is being turned and steering control is lost. When this does not shut the engine off, the only way to regain steering control is to restart the vehicle. When this does cause the engine to shut off the steering is restored with the restart. The stabili trak indicator appears just for an instant on the dic when this happens. Note: This is not the 'service stabili trak' indicator but more like stabili trak has been activated indicator. This happened first in reverse while backing into a parking spot. (three times in reverse). Then it started happening in drive, twice while pulling out from a stop sign and once while doing 15-20 mph turning onto a side street. The 15-20 mph turning instance caused the engine to shut off, steering became non existent for an instant and then very very heavy. I crossed the other lane of traffic and almost landed in the ditch. The truck has been at the dealership twice for a total of 14 days, both times 'cannot duplicate' was the result. No codes are being generated from these instances. Cause is unknown. Loose voltage or high resistance to grounds maybe. This has happened in hot and cold weather, running ac or heater or neither. There is no pattern. Please help.

Written by my wife on 11/04/16: On 11/02/16 at approximately 2:45 pm I was driving slowly through a parking lot trying to find a space. I found a space and as I turned my wheel to the left it locked up roughly, jerking the steering wheel out of my hands as I pulled into the spot. After the steering wheel locked up, jerking very abruptly, the power surged and the truck died. This is probably the 30th time this has happened to me. This particular time there was no error message displayed this time. Usually I get a message which pops up on the instrument cluster forward of the steering wheel that says 'service stabiltrac' or 'action required, steering assist is reduced, drive with care.' It seems there is a steering malfunction because this issue usually occurs while making a turn but the truck has had this same error message while driving straight on the highway. I am unsure of what the problem is but I do know it is dangerous to drive this vehicle until the problem is resolved. Road conditions/weather conditions also play no part in when this malfunction takes place. Other pertinent information regarding this issue is that the headlights do flicker from time to time. We have been dealing with this issue since August of this year and have still not found a resolution. Landmark Chevrolet in taylorville, il has had our vehicle in the shop 4 times on this issue alone and put over 200 miles on our vehicle with no resolution. Friendly Chevrolet in springfield il had our truck for nearly 3 weeks and put over 70 miles on the vehicle...no resolution. Here are a couple videos we recorded and uploaded to youtube documenting the issue. The steering rack developed a loud clunking noise that could be felt in the steering wheel when turned about 2/3 of the way to the left. The problem happens almost every time the wheel is turned. The truck could be parked or moving. After a week the dealer finally diagnosed the problem as having a bad steering rack. The truck has 66000 miles on it and shouldn't have this issue in its current condition and mileage. The repair is not covered under my powertrain warranty and the total bill is at $2700 which is complete unacceptable for a truck that was purchased brand new truck that I paid $42,000 for less than two years ago.

Power steering failed intermittently, two different ocassions. Once was while turning left at a low speed. The steering wheel became extremely stiff and started vibrating when I tried to turn the wheel. The power steering came back approximately 10 minutes later. After driving fine for about 5 minutes, the steering failure happened again, this time with a "service power steering" message on the dash display. Called the dealer and they will fix, but quite frustrating for a vehicle with a little over 30,000 miles that I have had for less than two months.

Steering wheel locked, as if it were in park, while I was driving. Seat belt light and alarm activated (I was wearing seat belt) and wrench icon appeared on instrument display. After a few seconds the lock disengaged and the icon disappeared and I was able to turn. I did some online research and apparently this problem has occurred to others. I do not want my or my family's safety jeopardized by this design flaw (the steering lock can engage while the vehicle is in gear and in motion!!!) so I am having my mechanic disable the lock.

The problem started while backing a trailer and turning. The stabiltrack light came on and the steering wheel jerked out of my hand. It happened a few more times and then the truck died. Later while driving the stabilitrack light would flash on and the dic would go black. The a.C. would also go out and come back on. It would also do this when turning on the signal light or stepping on the brake pedal. I was in a parking lot today driving slowly and the St message came then the dic went black again. When I tried to turn the wheel it started jerking back and pulled out of my hand. It seems that shutting the truck off and restarting solves the problem for a day or two. This is a very unsafe issue and I have seen and read many complaints. I have been a huge fan of GM and all I have ever owned were GM vehicles, but this issue is making me wonder if I should have bought a Ford instead. It seems that GM is not worried about recalling because of this safety issue, which there are many complaining of the same thing, and my warranty is about to run out.

The steering rack developed a loud clunk that you could feel in the steering wheel and head outside when turned about 2/3 of the way to the left. The problem would happen almost every time the wheel was turned. The truck could be standing still or moving. I brought it to the dealer where they diagnosed it as having a bad steering rack. The truck has 43000 miles on it and it was definitely a safety issue. I read a little online about the problem and there is several people who have had the same issue. Someone stated that the new ones are built different than the 2014 and possibly 2015 model years. If the new ones are updated and it is a known problem it would be nice if the manufacturer would fix them before steering racks start failing.

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. While driving 40 mph, another vehicle crashed head on into the contact's vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The contact sustained severe whiplash and a concussion, which required medical attention. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and sent an engineer to inspect the vehicle. Shortly after, while driving at an unknown speed, the stabilitrac warning light illuminated and the power steering malfunctioned. The steering wheel jerked violently. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that all the steering electronic sensors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 19,000.

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 mph, the steering wheel seized and veered independently. In addition, several unknown warning indicators illuminated. The contact was able to regain control after depressing the brake pedal. The failure recurred and the stability trac, and the service trailer brake warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that a excessive voltage drop resulted in a loss of power with the manual trailer brake, the BCM, electronic BCM, ECM, steering. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 27,416.

Truck vibrated new with 8 miles when we first drove it home. Pinpointed specific speeds and returned 9+ times to dealership over 7 months. Tires (twice), shocks and rear end were all replaced but did not stop vibration. 5 months from purchase we were followed by a neighbor and they saw my truck "dog tracking" (traveling sideways down the road). Dealer noted but would not follow at distance and speed required to witness the "dog tracking". dealer told me they were clueless and come get the truck. Local auto repair shop followed me and said there is definitely a problem. Front center of wheel to back center of wheel measures 1/2 inch less on driver side than passenger side but dealer says that is not a good measurement because their computer says everything is fine. This truck vibrates and "dog tracks" and dealership refuses to make proper offer and has given up on repair attempts. I am presently seeking help from a different dealer.

The part broke in half at low speed while I was driving in a construction area (my own driveway being installed) I hit something and the metal casing of the axle where it attaches to the front diff. Broke in half. I am 60 years old my wife was in the truck I was going so slow the speedometer was on 0. the dealer said the part was cracked by the impact. This is supposed to be a heavy duty 4X4 P/U, if I was going at 40 mph off road what would have broke and what would have been the result? I think the metal of the casing was flawed and I am afraid to keep the truck. The dealer said this isn't a warranty issue I had to put a claim into my ins. This is not only a concern for safety but for finances as well. I paid $44,000. Cash for this truck, it is the Sierra slt not only a 4X4 but it has 20" rims for added height. This was not hit hard enough to crack a steel casing. The truck is at a GMC/Buick dealer in mount dora fl. They said it might take awhile to find the parts to fix it. I do not think GMC makes cheap trucks or dangerous trucks but I think after this gets fixed I will be looking into trading it.
