This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your GMC dealer.
Never in my life have I experienced a problem with GM vehicles in the past . Their 6L80 transmissions fail prematurely as do their a/c condensers. Both of these items should have been recalled. I have two friends with similar vehicles with even less mileage and their transmissions and a/c condensers failed. I have owned several GM vehicles since 1974, some new and some slightly used. This is unacceptable. I've written to GM about this about a week and a half ago. I'm waiting on their response.

On our way from Ohio to Hilton Head SC 3/24/2019 the transmission stopped changing gears while driving thru the Appalachian mountains at night. We may it to Spratansburg, SC. We rented the only available pick up truck (Ford F150) from Enterprise, which was the only rental dealer open on Sunday 3/25/2019 . We needed a truck due to the amount of luggage and kayaks we were carrying.
We spent two nights in a hotel waoting for Monday 3/26/2019 to have the my GMC Sierra towed to a GM Dealer. The repair was performed under warranty and we picked up my truck upon return from Hilton Head on Friday 3/29/2019. We were informed by the master tech that the torque converter failure is a known issue due to a defective product from the vendor. Also that at the time of repair the same vendor was the only source for that torque converter and there is a likelihood of a recurrence.
I contacted GM for a request for reimbursement for the $529.42 rental car expense and was told that after review the request was denied since I didn't rent a GM product. Note on a Sunday there was only one option for a rental and all that was available in pick ups was a Ford F 150.
