This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your GMC dealer.
This truck has been nothing but a pain. All the recalls and gm will not even acknowledge the main issues. First the head lights, the transmission, the brake system, and the leaking ac. My transmission had metal shavings/partials in the pan, truck just quit going. Changed out the oil, just a temporary fix. It was changing gears with a horrid clunk sound and hard shift. I have to stand up on the brakes to stop. Then that death rattle, in Jackson Ms mph is 70 on I55.
It will rattle the crap out of you and damn near bounce the truck in all different directions.forget changing the tires, nothing helps. My girlfriend depends on a working vehicle, hell her life depends on that truck. She has to go out of state several times a month to see specialist but due to the transmission messing up, she hasn't been able to see these doctors. She can't keep this up, her life depends on a reliable truck. And of course the ac line somehow developed a hole, it was a hot summer last year.
This truck has been a nightmare. Recalls on stupid small things, recall and fix your faulty transmissions, ac lines, and fix that death rattle. You know it's a problem. Fix it. All my older Chevy vehicles haven't given me one bit of trouble. My 2009 gm diesel hasn't had any issues, 2009 dodge ram no issues. But that gmc Sierra, junk.

3rd gear & beyond - no movement
I don't haul anything; never been off-road; haven't towed a trailer; never even used 4 wheel drive. A new car should not leave you stranded on the highway. The dealer was amazing. They really took care of me. I hope that this was just a fluke and that the transmission isn't junk.

This vehicle never towed anything more than 4,000 lbs, and was never used to plow snow. Mileage was 80% highway commuting. The 6-speed transmission (I think it's a 6L80) stuttered on the highway for a few minutes, then quit entirely, leaving it in neutral. Transmission shop said the fluid pump was starved because the filter was clogged with metallic debris. Powertrain warranty of 5 years / 160,000kms was exceeded by 7 months and 3,000kms. Filter and fluid last changed at 72,000kms (yes, it was due again).
The dealer gave me a reduced labour rate, and GM Canada Customer Service gave me a $250 service credit as a goodwill gesture (though they both likely made much more than that selling and installing a rebuilt transmission).
I've owned and maintained 20+ vehicles (9 different domestic & foreign makes) over 46 years of driving, but this is only the second I've bought new - and the most expensive by far. After only 5 1/2 years of ownership, maintenance costs have been higher than any previous I've owned - exceeding that for cars I've driven to over 400,000km.
The transmission shop said they do a lot of rebuilds of 6-speed GM trannies. However, I haven't found many reports online of others with catastrophic failures (8-speeds are another story). Anyone else have this issue?
Note: If you have one of these, be sure to get the filter and fluid inspected and replaced just BEFORE the warranty expires. You can be sure I'll be doing that for the rebuild (unless I trade it for a Tundra before then).
