Driving across I 40 in Ark. and stopped for gas. When starting the engine got an esc failure notice and the power steering was non existent. I could barely steer the truck to get away from pumps. I called onstar and they said I had multiple failures shown on diagnostic. They called a tow truck to take it to GMC dealer. Tried several times over the 45 minutes waiting on tow with no change. Finally about the time tow truck arrived started truck and steering was fine.
I drove it to local gmc dealer. They check and cleared all codes, test drove the truck, rechecked codes and nothing showed up. They said they had no idea what the problem was or what caused it. Drove the rest of the way to DFW (4 hrs) with no problems (luckily). Noticed this AM that in owners manual it states that electric steering may fail if it gets too hot, but will work again when it cools down. THAT'S COMFORTING.
I was lucky that it happened when the truck was not in motion. After reading others with similar complaints, I have talked to my dealer and am parking the truck until GMC announces a recall to fix it and or they buy the thing back. This is a very serious problem that is going to get someone killed if it doesn't get fixed.
