Subject: Safety Complaint Regarding Steering Airbag Trim and Steering Axle Issues Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), I am writing to formally file a complaint regarding serious safety issues with my GMC vehicle. Specifically: 1.The steering airbag trim has begun to crack, which raises concerns about its structural integrity and potential interference with airbag deployment in the event of a collision. 2.The steering axle is making unusual noises due to loose bolts and worn bushings, posing a potential risk to steering control and overall vehicle safety. I recently took the vehicle to an authorized GMC dealership for inspection and repair. However, the dealership refused to address these issues despite their clear impact on safety and their apparent connection to manufacturing defects. Given the critical nature of these problems, I urge the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to investigate this matter thoroughly. These defects not only compromise the safety of the vehicle but also endanger the lives of the driver, passengers, and others on the road. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I am happy to provide any additional information or documentation required for your investigation.

While at highways speeds, the steering will not return to center while going/coming out of a curve. It acts as if the power steering system is failing or low on fluid but that is not the case. I-??m aware of a current recall with the Sierra but my VIN does not fall into the recall. The recall is for a software fix. GMC will not look into without charging me. This is a safety issue while driving. It holds the steering wheel in the turning position and I have to pull it to center.

Pulled up to a stop sign and attempt to make a right turn as I was in the turn the steering wheel locked up in the turn which almost caused and accident. I had to get the vehicle towed to Wyatt Johnson GMC dealership in Clarksville TN. I purchased this truck in Jan 2024 from Romain Cross Pointe Auto Park in Evansville, Indiana at 7600 E Division St, Evansville, IN 47715 it had 13k miles. I'm the second owner I only put 2k miles since ownership. I was able to obtain a vehicle history report which shows this has been an on going problem among other issues DTC code U0131 Lost communication with Power steering Module shows at least 9 times that Romain GMC try to fix the problem. This is extremely dangerous to drive and the steering goes out this has been a known problem.. See attachments

We drove our Truck from Hartwell Georgia to Coloma Wisconsin on [XXX]. En route we drove through heavy rain. We got to Coloma on [XXX]. The truck sat outside overnight in cold weather. Temps were in the low 20's to high teens. On [XXX] I went out to drive the truck to town on errands. After starting it the steering would not move. Had the truck towed to Wheelers Chevrolet of Coloma. Weather had warmed up and the steering was working. The dealer kept the truck and let it sit outside overnight. The next morning they started it and the steering would not move. The brought the truck into the heated garage and after a hour or so the steering worked. They decided to keep it inside and dry it out. It sat in a heated garage till noon on the [XXX] at which time I took the truck to my wife's brother house and put it in a heated garage till we left on the morning of the [XXX] to head back home. Temps all day were below zero. We pulled off the road after about two hours and the steering began to bind up. Rotating the wheel got it loosened up and we elected to continue. About 15 minutes later on [XXX] at highway speed the steering began to lock up. I managed to get it to the side of the road.. Again rotating the wheel side to side for about 5 minutes got it to free up. We continued and made it home. Clearly there is water somewhere in the steering. Pretty scary having locked steering at speed. No problems in warm weather. I will be going to my GMC dealer today. Richard Kay superstore in Anderson SC. My service techs name at Wheelers Chevy was David Borre. Phone number 715-600-3358 INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Driving home in the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500, when the error message came up to Service Power Steering. A short time later also had messages for ESC, Restraint System, and Trail Brakes error messages. Then lost all electric power assist on the power steering, and truck almost impossible to turn without extreme effort. Took to dealer and they had truck for almost 2 weeks and said they couldn't replicate the problem. Within 24 hours of getting it back I had the exact same problem, with total loss of power steering assist. Parked truck for approx an hour, and it reset and was functioning normally again. Short time later got the Service Power Steering message again, but didn't lose power steering this time before the computer evidently reset. Major safety issue because if this happens while taking a turn or something at high speeds, I'll be in a ditch or lose control into another lane. Based on research, this has been happening with GM vehicles for a while now, but GM doesn't have any recall on these models, so dealer tells me there is nothing they can do.
