Sierra 2500 SL 8.1L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 1,000 miles

From the time the truck was new, it has never used less tha 1 qt. of oil per thousand miles. Now it uses about a qt. per 500 miles. It has 33000 miles on it. the truck does not smoke, and it does not leak oil. It also has the " cold start knock". I suspect the knock is really piston slap resulting from poor manufacturing tolerances born from poor engineering. I've been reading on the internet and heard about things like a tube that extends from the underside of the intake manifold that could be sucking oil. if anyone has an answer, I'd be happy to hear it.

AT 600 MILES THE 8.1L ENGINE STARTED TO CLATTER LOUDLY AT COLD STARTS AND AT 3,200 MILES THE ENGINE GAVE A LOW OIL WARNING. IT HAS BEEN CONSUMING A QT OF OIL EVERY 1,500 TO 1,600 MILES SINCE THEN.
