Sierra 2500

  • 72,600 miles
Driving down/up a very curvy road and my speedometer became inaccurate. I had to use my gps the best I could to know how fast I was going, so that I wouldn't speed. The speedometer would move up and down but at the wrong speeds. In park at one point said 56mph, at another point 45-50mph. I took it to my local Chevy/GMC dealer to get it repaired. Waiting for the appropriate parts, but the parts are going to cost me over $400 + labor. This is a dangerous problem to have, especially where it affects all my gauges, not just my speedometer, mine just showed itself through the speedometer. This is a ridiculous cost to incur for something that shouldn't fail in the first place.

Sierra 2500 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 49,600 miles
2004 GMC Sierra 2500 speedometer failure at 49K miles: Speedometer "offset" is high and renders speedometer unusable (reads 70 when traveling 0 mph and pegs out at > 120mph when travelling normal highway speeds, then fails pegged, and is inoperative).

Sierra 2500 4WD 8-cyl Diesel

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles
- the contact stated that any time he drives his 2004 GMC Sierra (80000 failure mileage) his speedometer does not register the correct speed. The contact stated that while sitting idle in a parking lot it registers 55 mph. The contact had an appointment with the dealer 3/20/2007 to look into the problem. The current mileage was 81000.

Sierra 2500 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 54,000 miles
Driving on the interstate, my speedometer started indicating I was doing 20 mph while I was actually going at least 60 mph. It proceeded to only indicate speeds from approx -10 mph to 10 mph. Then the oil pressure gauge went 180 degrees beyond it's max, then the battery gauge did the same.

Sierra 2500 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 49,079 miles
I own a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 crew cab pickup with 59,000 miles. In the last 4 months the speedometer has been giving incorrect readings, I.e. 70 mph when stopped, 115 when doing 40 mph etc. On occasion, it either doesn't work at all, or the needle is fully pegged. There is no way to tell how fast this vehicle is going. GMC customer service has stated that they can provide no financial assistance for the $320 repair because "they cannot make a business case for it." GMC refuses to acknowledge that this is a pervasive problem throughout many of their vehicles in this model year despite ample documentation of the problem easily found at auto repair websites on the internet. Additionally, previous complaints of this exact nature and exact vehicle have been filed with NHTSA.
