While driving a short distance I heard a thud followed by a grinding noise and lack of power. Vehicle was towed to a trusted mechanic that I have known and used for years. Diagnosed with a crack in the transfer case. Mechanic had difficulty finding a part and was informed by someone at the GMC dealer that this part was on back order because of an issue known by GMC but a recall had not been issued. New part would not be available for over a month and repairs were needed since it is my primary vehicle. A used part with a warranty was found and was installed for a total of $1500. Vehicle power train warranty was expired.
Update from Sep 20, 2019: Less than months after transfer case was replaced with a used part - the replacement part cracked in the same exact spot as the original. Luckily, the part was still covered by a warranty but local mechanic recommended diagnosis by dealer to determine if there is an issue with the transmission. Contacted GMC to see if they were aware of the issue and they said they were not. Informed me that the vehicle is no longer under warranty and that diagnostics and repairs would be up to me.
I still have 1 year of financing this vehicle and cannot afford to spend more money on it. I do not want to drive it, especially with my 7 year old daughter in the vehicle. Really unhappy with GMC and their lack of support.

AS previously reported, I have had issues with the transfer case on my 2012 GMC Terrain - the original transfer case cracked and was replaced with a used part in June of 2019. This part cracked in the same exact spot as the previous part in September of 2019 and replaced with another used part. It now appears as though this replacement part has cracked and failed on February 7, 2020. There is currently no recall on this car despite the fact that several other people are reporting the same issue and new parts are difficult to find.
I have contacted GMC several times to no avail, since my powertrain warranty is expired. I am now weighing my options as to whether to have this repaired again or take it as a total loss. Still committed to financing for at least 8 more months on this vehicle.
