Yukon 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 115,000 miles
Anti lock brakes activate at low speeds. This has been going on for about 1 year. Took vehicle to service department 6 months ago and they would not service this problem. At very low speeds the anti lock brakes activate. The braking distance is greater when this happens. This happens everyday, but not every time the brakes are applied.

ABS fails at low speeds. Pressure will dump, pedal drops or shudders, and vehicle will continue to roll for 30 feet before stopping. ABS self-checks and passes test. I got tired of poor performance and pulled the ABS fuse to disable it.

The steering would jerk the wheel left or right while in a turn causing a momentary loss of control of the vehicle. Steering box was replaced before. Finally the evo sensor was replaced. ABS also have never worked felt good, the pedal goes to low before the brakes slow the vehicle down. This has been a complaint since the truck was new. The retailer seems not very concerned with my complaints. Especially knowing that I am an automobile technician they feel I will let the problem go. Their repairs have been unsatisfactory from the beginning. I have had to complain about problems many times before, finally the problems are fixed. With the steering problem I had to contact another dealer tech I knew and ask him the problem which he knew what was wrong immediately. Please do something before all these trucks with this steering and brake problem. ***dimsii IVOQ entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****734335

Shortly after purchasing vehicle I noticed that the anti-lock brakes would activate at slow speeds on normal surfaces. Dealer checked vehicle out and indicated that everything was fine, and since this is my first vehicle with ABS I assumed this was normal. Over the past year the ABS has been activating much more often and now the dealer says the hub assembly needs replaced at a cost of $300. In checking recall history, I have found where the 1998 Yukon had a recall for this hub assembly in the spring of 1998 and the problem seems very similar to the problem with my vehicle. The dealer indicates that my anti-lock brakes are not working at this time. I would be interested in knowing if other 1997 Yukon are having the same problem. A lady slammed on her brakes in front of me when I put on my brakes there was nothing there. I then pumped the brakes and felt them catch. They popped and I stopped with a sudden jerk. I came within maybe a inch of hittng her. Something needs to be done about this brake system. I took my car in thinking my brakes were going out. I was told everything was fine. They are not fine.

When driving on freeway at 65mh consumer hit brakes because vehicle in front stopped very fast. Upon applying the brakes, vehicle swerved from side to side and lost control. Steering wheel was shaking very badly. Finally came to a stop. Contacted dealer. This has happened before, but the steering wheel had moved unexpectedly at high speeds.

Erratic power steening control while in turns and highway driving, not always present, but able to reproduce with patients of dealer on test drive. Since new dealer has said it was tire balancing and alignment which they attemped to correct several time. After one of these correction in Aug 99, problem became more apparent. Wife is driver and I always took their word for correction until I insisted there is other problem and find it. So far they have replaced steering box, put on 4 new tires and wheels among a host of balancing/alignments etc, no corrections as of yet. Steering wheel pulls eradictly/shudders feels gone at times. Is interm at times but much more pronounced of late. Brakes; there have been many occasions where the brakes lock up when applied heavily, I learned this by asking wife and duplicated it on nurmerous occasions with erratic reaction of the brake pedal.

When driving at a speed of 30 mph and over, the steering releases for a few seconds and the vehicles wander all over the place. Also the steering feel loose at all times. Also when stepping on the brakes sometimes the truck doesn't stop, I also don't think the ABS is working properly. I tried it in slippery conditions and I never felt the pedal shake. I had a 1995 Yukon before and it worked fine. 8ak

The anti-lock brakes failed to adequately engage and stop the Yukon under sudden stop situations. The brakes do not engage adequately and the vehcile continues to move forward with what could be summarized as floating forward for at least 30 feet which has resulted in 2 crashes into the rear of other vehicles. When the dealer was questioned about this problem, a services representative stated that it was a design problem with all GMC/Chevrolet SUVS. GMC's only suggestion was to take it to a dealer to have the service department examine it. I believe that your recently negotiated recall with GM should be expanded to include 1997 models.

Major brake failure, in snow, on hill, brake pedal went to the floor after a loud rumble from the rear of the truck. Had master cylinder replaced, and 10 days later the exact samething happened, dealer installed another master cylinder. Test drove, blew that cylinder, then replaced the ABS modulator along with another master cylinder, and sent us on our way. It is now two weeks later and brake failure is being noticed again, truck is sitting currently at dealership. Also, the steering went very loose around September 1998, had that checked and repaired, at this time the steering is again getting loose.
