Rear seat belts in 2000 GMC Yukon fail to retract, providing no safety for children in the rear seat when seated in child restraint seats that are not semi-permanently mounted in the rear with the seat belt threaded through them. Child seats that use the seat belt as the primary restraining device are useless when the belts do not tighten. This is a known problem to GMC and the dealer has repaired and/or replaced the seat belt on several occassions. The dealer's recommendation is to not pull the belt out all the way because it may not retract - sometimes hard to enforce with children. The solution is fairly simple - the affected vehicles should have a redesigned seat belt mechanism provided to vehicle owners, either by recall or on request.
